Never have i had so little interest in getting this release, if he hadn't touched the OT and carried over the extras from the DVD it would have been a day one purchase. But i looked at the box set last week in HMV and it seemed almost bare-bones!!

I would say that the 2 archive discs, particularly the original trilogy one, are excellent. Like a little personal Star Wars museum. There's plenty of video segments and behind the scenes stuff on there and a ton of in depth looks at most of the models. Very impressive if you like that kind of thing. Also, including the original 3 vintage making of docs on disc 9 and the new Empire 30 doc adds to the set quite nicely. The rest is fluff, although each film has 2 audio commentaries now I think. I wish they'd including the DVD stuff too, but I kept my old set so not too bothered.

Probably me for one. Just for the novelty, and despite my general lack of enthusiasm about TPM. Not quite so 'meh' regarding AOTC and ROTS, and the 3D trail on SKY3D does look rather nice.

I'll be getting the 3D Blu-ray in the hope that it looks better than the current version.

As for the current BD extras, the 'archive' disc for the OT is indeed excellent, but the one for the prequels is a big letdown because seeing all the prequel props just doesn't generate the buzz that the OT ones do, and leaving out the existing deleted scenes was unforgiveable. The disc feels incomplete next to the OT equivalent because all the OT deleted material of note is on that disc, and in HD to boot. The prequels get a few shreds of unfinished scenes and some animatics. Woo.

There was absolutely no decent reason to have left off Empire Of Dreams from the archival discs here. Just cynical ones.

Lucas did the same thing even in the VHS days. The gold/silver SE set had a little documentary for each film explaining the revisions. When that was reissued a few years later, now with making of footage from Episode II, none of the docs from the last version were included.

Not excusing any of it, just saying it's no real surprise...

I'm not sure if this is old news but I saw this the other day:

Quote:
Exclusive: George Lucas clamps down on fan-made tribute - In what seems difficult to see as anything other than a case of sour grapes, Lucasfilm has successfully ordered the removal of Jamie Benning's Star Wars filmumentary tribute, Returning To Jedi, from YouTube.

The trouble is when bootleg material starts getting 'broadcasted' in a very public way on places like youtube there's going to be trouble.

Maybe these talented people should spend their time on original projects.

Absolutely right. You can't expect copyright owners to sit idly by, not least regarding youtube where uploaders can (and do) make quite a bit of money from the ads. Not saying that those guys have uploaded their work for that purpose - the ubiquity of youtube simply means that you'll reach the most people - but when cash is involved there's bound to be trouble. It's telling that LFL never bothered hounding these people when they were sharing the re-edits among themselves.

Lucas may be painted as the devil incarnate (again) but he's simply protecting his work, like any other filmmaker has the right to do.

Indeed, although I'm glad Harmy got his fantastic despecialised versions out there.

Sure. The principle's the same, but it's much more galling when hours and hours worth of fantastic content - some of it in HD - is ignored.

(BTW we didn't even get the full story with those little docs on the SE VHS tapes; they were part of a longer featurette on the NTSC SE Laserdisc boxset, which was then chopped up into 3 bits for the VHS release).

REVELATION: Greedo always shot first, it's just that because George Lucas shot the scene in close-up so we never actually saw it!

I have a pretty objective view of Lucas, I'm not one of these fans that mercilessly slags him off, but this time the bloke is well and truly off his rocker.

He's basically saying that everybody liked the idea that Han Solo was a baddass, and Lucas for some reason thinks it better to make him not badass.

I know people go on about it, but I still can't understand why he has such low disregard for the people that made him so rich!

When people read things into a movie that aren't there, but make it better, usually a director smiles to himself and pretends it was intentional and planned. Not Lucas. He changes it back to the original crap way he intended that isn't as good.
