I remember seeing Mark Hamill being interviewed on "Clapperboard" (an old ITV kids film show hoseted by Cris Kelly) think it was during the release of Empire in cinemas, that it was due to be made as a series of 9 films.

Think there may have been some mention of remaking episodes 4-6 as I'm sure he said something along the lines of "one of the viewers may get to play Luke Skywalker"; making episodes 4-6, then 1-3, 4-6 & 7-9, with the final trilogy played by the original actors as they would all have aged significantly enough to play their older selves again....

Anyone else remember this?

It was definitely a 9-parter by the time Empire came out. I remember reading loads of speculative articles about it at the time. The whole 9-part saga was called, IIRC, The Journal of the Whills which is quoted in the first edition Star Wars novelisation.

The BBC did a documentary on Lucas for the release of Phantom Menace, and it starts with Rick McCallum AND Steven Spielberg both referencing the 9-part thing. So much for Lucas saying it was an invention of the media.

A NEW HOPE was added in 78 when Lucas knew he could finance the other parts....

Yes. It will never happen though.

Hell, if they announced an episode VII with all three principal leads I will [cream] myself.

Ok, so I got these for xmas (hooray !) and have had a quick look through the extras and also this thread. Am I right in saying that the DVDs all have different extras (I can't see the deleted scene of Yoda arriving on Dagobah in Sith for example). It doesnt have Empire of Dreams documentary which I really liked. Dammit - can't throw the dvds away now.

Yes, Lucasfilm wanted to give something new rather than just a re-hash. Good idea in my opinion.

Yes. Empire of Dreams is fairly essential when it comes to bonus material so my DVDs are staying put.

I think it was an idiotic decision. There's no need to worry about rehashing if you're providing lots of new material as well, or at the very least upgrading the old stuff to HD. Most of the deleted scenes on the prequel DVDs were finished in HD, and including them on the Blu should've been a no-brainer.

The trailers in HD would've been a nice touch too, but Lucasfilm just didn't give a toss. And dredging up several knackered old TV specials at the expense of Empire Of Dreams et al was a typical FU from Lucasfilm.

What's so great about the Bond Blu-rays is that they've included every scrap of stuff from the Ultimate DVDs - upgraded to HD where possible - and added some newly found goodies as well. You can safely sell the DVD and free up some shelf space, but that's not good enough for Lucasfilm and Star Wars.

Well there will no doubt be another release on BD anyway, there's no way Lucasfilm will only release the films once!

I can't be arsed with bonus features anyway, and when I do watch them it's only usually the once, but I agree -bloody stupid!

And I thought the deleted scenes from the prequels WERE included on this set?

Nope. There are a few new fragments of scenes or animatics which weren't on the DVDs, but the deleted scenes from the DVDs have not been ported over.
