I had the strong impression while watching this at the cinema that it was an overt hommage to Hitchcock. The graphic composition of the opening credits with the aerial shots of the train racing along diagonally aligned tracks was very reminiscent of Saul Bass's credits for North by Northwest. I'm sure there were other such elements in the film as well but I can't bring them to mind.

Two which sprang to mind for me were the train setting recalling The Lady Vanishes and Gyllenhaal's hero in a tie also bringing to mind North by Northwest.
