Just goggled "How much does the stig get paid" and found a response dated Jan 2008 not answering the question but stating that the Stig is Ben Collins...so I guess its been well known its just that as he is effecitvely unknown, nobody cared.

A massive fuss over nothing. I don't care who 'The Stig' is, as if the character is the linchpin of the show, it isn't. A guy on BBC Breakfast said it's "part of the sitcom", I wanted to lamp him.

I'd say BBC/Top Gear have more to worry about re: the quality of the show, not who 'The Stig' is in real life.

He was also named in the accident report from Hammond's crash.

They did that with Perry Mccarthy (the original black stig) after he released his biograpgy. They drop him off an aircraft carrier in a white jag.

For what its worth, i dont think it matters who's behind the helmet. Thats why they wear a helmet

the stig aka ben collins is surely the worst-kept secret on television in recent years???

it was even discussed here is 2008. http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/fo...&postcount=323

it's a shame he's been officially named though - i think if nothing else, kids loved the mystery.

i suppose it could go several ways now that he's been revealed. ditch "the stig" altogether (although, it must make £££ for the bbc), get another anonymous driver (and risk yet another reveal) or just have a non-stig official driver / an ex-f1 driver or something.

To help keep the mystery for the young viewers they should get everyone the have any influence over (be it racing drive, pop star or Tom Cruise) to admit on cam area that they were the Stig. Ben Collins is such a nobody that articles like "Dawn French says she is the Stig?" on page 15 of the sun would soon bury the truth.

I'm thinking they might drop the colour of a Stig and go for a F1 style Stig complete with TG style advertising, Peniston etc.

They could call him Rubens Stigichello... Lewis HamilStig?

Believe it or not... Clarkson, May and Hammond have just appeared on a brand new episode of Top Gear. Top Gear Australia! It's Nigel vs. Bruce.. Top Gear: The Ashes Special.

It was very good too, better than some of the proper episodes of this last series. The bit with the Lions was hilarious,

But I reserve judgement as to whether they have completely pulled the series out of the toilet though... only time will tell.

Surely this'll get a re-edit for the first ep of the UK series. Along with a more favorable voiceover, slagging the Aussies off.

Yeah I was thinking that while watching it, there is quite a lot of stuff they can use for the UK series.

That was pretty good, although I don't think all that much of the .AU presenters. They seem to lack the chemistry of Clarkson/Hammond/May.

James May was fantastic on the rally challenge
