Star Wars movies coming to BD in September 2011

I am surprised there is not a thread about this already but anyway Lucasfilm's Steven Sansweet has announced that work is well underway on a six film Star Wars BD set with lots of new extras. Bill Hunt at the Digital Bits reckons it will be out around October 2011.

I guess the debate about whether we will all buy them again (we will) and whether we will get the unaltered original trilogy (we won't) starts now. I would also like to see the long rumoured changes to Phantom Menace including a CGI yoda.

Quote:
During a panel at the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, stated that the company has been working on a Star Wars Blu-ray set. "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material", said Sansweet.

Sansweet didn't give a date, but he said " it won't be in the too distant future."

The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, says that Lucasfilm "tentatively plans the official Blu-ray release to happen in October 2011." Obviously, with the Alien Anthology coming later this year, a 2010 release of Star Wars can be safely ruled out, and considering that A New Hope opened theatrically in May 1977, late 2011 would be a natural choice for a 35th Anniversary Edition Anthology.

Do you think he will play around with and edit dialogue/scenes and update the special effects on any of them?

Of course he will, Mas. I'm looking forward to it actually, as there's still a fair few tweaks (and fixes to outright errors from the 2004 DVDs) I'd like to see done to the originals.

The originals should be on there of course, but as shand says, it ain't gonna happen.

Well, I would hope that he learns a little from the 2004 DVD releases; and as well as fixing all the things that need it, actually gives us an HD release of the original cinemkatic cuts of eps 4-6. Than at least he should avoid most of the "he raped my childhood" whinging.

Is it too much to hope that virtually all of the CGI gets redone in Phantom Menace? It really has dated badly.

Theres a dodgy costume in the Phatom Meanace it looks like one of those rubber costumes you would expect to see in an episode of Power rangers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI You can see the alien in the background at 50 seconds behind Jar Jar and Neeson it does have a line of dialogue. Perhaps they could go over this in CGI to

The whole Gungan battle at the end looks like a CG Wallace and Gromit episode. There's a lot of plasticine looking CGI in that TPM.

Problem with updating the new trilogy's cgi would be that you had the people that experienced star wars the first time with these films again blasting Lucas 10 years down the line

just my 2c

i think he should just leave ALL the films alone now. He couldn't help tinker with the prequels for their dvd's releases anyway

I have no repsect for Lucas at all now.

He milked the OT several times and ruined them imho. I would not go as far as GL raped my childhood etc but he is a businessman first and a filmaker third.

i wonder if all the CGI that was added to the original trilogy was rendered with enough polygons, and at a high enough resolution for Blu Ray, considering it was done for a direct-to-dvd release, and Blu Ray didn't exist back then..

they might have to redo it all, in which case, will GL be able to resist tinkering further?

It was rendered for film which has a far higher 'resolution' than Bluray has

They were, I went down to London to see Empire at the Odeon. At the time there was supposed to be a bomb on the tracks south of York and we had to do York - London by bus

Can't anyone remember the trailers with the TV in the centre of the screen and the X-Wing flying out?

Personally, I'm expecting a clean-up and an audio remix optimised for DTS MA. Will be buying regardless though.
