I've never been in a Coffee Republic, were they any good?

I'm trying hard to avoid Starbucks, I'd have had one a day easily. That is a lot of cash to blow on coffee.

I'm trying to convince myself that the Tassimo pods are the same
They might smell the same, but they don't taste the same

Can only be a matter of time for JJB can't it? Anyone been in one? You could hold a track meet there's so much dead space.

I think Sports Soccer has taken a lot of their business away, I went in a JJB the other day and the staff looked shocked to see a customer (didn't buy anything)

I'm starting to like Home Bargains

I never went into one until someone mentioned their cheap BBQ sauce in the bargain forum. Since then I've popped in every now and then and picked up some pretty good deals.

Our Woolies has become a 'B&M Bargains'. Aside from household tat, they have a lot of nearly-out-of-date food items - tins of pop for 10p, that kind of thing. Our weekly food bill is now £8.04.

Was just about to post about Allied too

I'm sure they'll have a sale to sort it all out - just for a change.

So the insurance division (profitable) and the best stores have been sold very quickly, to an insider by any chance?

Yes the Times confirms that the prearranged package of (presumably best performing) stores was sold to the current owner (Hilco) and the existing management team.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/to...cle6718647.ece

The article suggests that those directly out of pocket will be the showroom/warehouse landlords for the properties not being carried on (as well as 700 staff). Now it might sound alright at first thought to shaft faceless landlords in this way, but it's not really when you consider that many of these commercial landlords are actually ordinary people's pension providers and other investment providers. It also (in the long term) shafts any competitors big-time (possibly leading to more job losses down the line at those companies) since the new cherry-picked Allied Carpets will be super lean with none of the debt baggage that may be holding competitors back. So it's pretty scandalous that this sort of prearranged partial buyout of just the best bits can still happen. I thought administrators of failed companies were supposed to try and get the best value for the failed business, how can they have done that if they haven't waited to see if any competitors wanted to make any offers?

Hardly surprising, nice shops (Borders, Game, Paperchase and Starbucks usually under one roof) but their prices are
(with the exception of the odd - but very good - bargain every now and then).

They stock a decent range of US mags and their kids sections are usually very good.

Shame

Since Waterstones took over Ottakers, Borders was the only "rival" round our way. Border's online site was sometimes cheaper than Amazon and sold American imports, in-store they sold everything at rrp, so only good for browsing.
Now we're back down to Waterstones and WHSmith with their watered down stock, high street shopping just got more boring for me
Really miss Ottakers though, great staff and wider choice.

Vicky Wines & Haddows announced major redundancies.

Supermarkets to blame for this one I think.
