I just need to know if any/all will play AVCHD discs OK.

Kevin.
AVCHD is one of the logos on the top of the player so I guess they do play

Lovely price. But for those that don't know, that set is region locked to A.

I presumed it would be. Wasn't there some sort of issue with the packaging too, something to do with the hubs holding the discs??

Off-topic, but I realised the other night where your "I do deny...." comes from, I know I recognised it!

Frustratingly, the UK set misses out on the original mono audio. Great set otherwise.

Yeah, the book packaging itself is gorgeous but the hubs are horrible, just these round blobs of rubber that are as useful as a concrete parachute.

Thankfully I recently bought the US remastered DVD boxset which has individual cases. I didn't want to sell it for peanuts, so I've taken out the DVD discs and put in the Blu ones instead. And I've squeezed in the POTA remake too, so my custom boxset is nice and complete. Heaven for a like me.

As for my user title, I can't allow them to sap and impurify my precious bodily fluids.

The UK set also misses out the 200 page hardcover book and does not include the option to see Battle in its extended version either with extra scenes in the right place within the film.

This was the release that made me buy a multiregion player

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but I'm working my way through the Apes Blu-ray set and I've got up to the unrated cut of Conquest which is just fantastic.

The filmmakers made their displeasure clear regarding the 'softening up' of the film in Joe Russo's book Planet Of The Apes Revisited, and to see the ending as intended was a real treat. It may weaken Caesar's character by painting him as an out-and-out villain - which is partly why they agreed (begrudgingly) to change it in the first place - but it's too late for that; the original ending is the logical climax for the film, and the theatrical ending is a last-minute bodge job which just doesn't work at all.

Extended cut of Battle tomorrow night, and then Tim Burton's version to round off my Apes odyssey. Love it.

I could never go back to the cut with the awkward line "And we, who are not human, can afford to be humane" after catching the real deal. Reeks of dilution.

Conquest is a little cheap and rough around the edges in parts, but I enjoy it. Escape's the other decent sequel... unlike the other entries, these two actually play well together. Shame the Paul Dehn scripted fourth sequel never came to fruition. Battle is weak overall, as much as I genuinely love post-apocalyptic matte shots.

Totally agree. Beneath and Battle aren't utterly terrible, yet they commit the cardinal sin of being utterly boring. But Escape and Conquest work pretty darned well, not least when viewed in quick succession.

I'm preferring Beneath over Battle, just because of the utterly mental last third with the sing-a-long mutants and that.

Sure. A-bomb worshipping mutants pretty much = WIN. But the rest of it is a snore-inducing rehash, and it just ain't the same without Roddy McDowall.

I think POTA > Escape > Conquest > Beneath > Battle - but I've got a lot of time for them all - and the TV series - and even the surreal animated series

I forgot that - I quite enjoyed it apart from the mess at the end - probably between Beneath and Battle..

I saw this when it first came out in 1968 (Odeon Westbourne Grove, West London, my favorite cinema), & would you believe it, the ending came as a shock, I didn't know, no internet in those days.

I first saw it in about 75 - on a double bill with Escape...

...and they showed Escape first
