I thought he would put the bet on but give her the money if she lost. Perhaps he just put 4k on all the horses

How did I know what "The system" was? Well I must confess I saw it on an episode of Ed (the CH4/E4 dramedy), the one that Danny Divitto guest starred in. The episode had someone like Derren giving out tips all over then inviting people to pay money for new tips. The clues were there from the start, multiple emails were being written (I missed the start they might have mentioned it then), the fact that they didn't put anything on the first tip and then ever increasing amounts.

Later Derren showed you all those photo's clearly the people who were playing. BTW that bit was just a touch of magic to convince them there was a way of predicting the impossible, all he did was to get them to pick the right envelopes, photo's and positions on the board, the number in the card and on the backs were a result of those achievements, not additional achievements.

The final clue, to anyone who hadn't worked it out, was the homeopathy clue. The claim with homeopathy is that they take something and dilute it with water, then dilute that and on and on, which is essentially what he did with the participants. Also, both "The system" and alternative medicine are thinking traps as he explained

Tricks of the mind is Derrens book and it's an interesting read, it doesn't specifically mention "The system" or anything like it but it explains peoples psychology works and how we often fall into bad thinking or thinking traps because of an inability to see the wider picture or to understand what's really going on. It's out in paperback now and can be bought from Amazon UK for just under £4

Most likely that's what happened.

But the real question is how did he know to write the name of the horse that won on the losing ticket?

Answers on a postcard..

The photo thing...

Suggestion

he hypnotised them, or something...

he made a point of telling them not to pick them based on looks, name etc... I thought then that that takes away the randomness away from them - they subconsciously picked them based on names

as for the order in which they returned, at first I thought that was easy when he knew who each person was going to pick, he just put the first one at the front so they had the shortest walk but then I remembered they could pick any spot to stand on.

What I also can't figure out is the envelope distribution

Did they film lots of groups of racing professionals and eventually just get lucky?

I still stand by my opinion that Darren Brown is an entertainer, not a magician or a mind manipulator or any of that stuff. He often uses hypnosis and as a result his programmes usually make for interesting viewing. More often than not it's the way he presents it to you that makes you believe you are seeing something more spectacular than you really are - The Heist was a great example of this.

Tonight's programme was a little different in that it contained a logical puzzle that was quite solveable - he still slipped in his trickery with the final bet and the hanging pictures section, but, as mentioned by Camaj, even that was overplayed with the intials of the name, the pictures in the envelopes and the probability on the back of the pictures all part of the same event. He did, to be fair, calculate the final odds correctly though (24x500x499x498x497).

And it's no stretch to think that the production team could have put £4000 on each horse in the final race.

Also wouldn't be a stretch to suppose the whole thing was faked, and the lady they chose to put on £4,000 was an actress.

After being fooled by DB in the Russian Roulette show, I simply mistrust his shows completely. Fair enough, interesting analysis, and the methods were intelligent to reveal, but i bet they were all actors.

Thanks to the wonder of "juice" that is a waste of time

I remember the first time I heard about this sort of system, but with football not horses..... it was about 18 years ago reading the Jolly Roger's!

That just wouldn't happen in this day and age. Phone in scandals, making the Queen look grumpy, fixed talent show results. The whole industry is soooo paranoid about not 'telling the truth', it just wouldn't happen.

I've been working on Location Location Location for the past 5 months, and we are not even allowed to edit the programme in a different order than it is shot these days. It's ridiculous - what ever happened to making a good programme, the best way you can?

For example - if we film Kirstie and Phil showing a couple round a house that they love and want to put on offer on on the first day of filming, we have to show that first in the filming programme! So screw constructing a programme the best way you can, building up any sense of dramatic tension, telling a story properly. It's not 'being truthful'. It's got beyond a joke this business I tell you.

I'm pretty certain he placed a bet on all horses and then switched the ticket which was then edited.

He'll have said something along the lines of -

"Can I just check we've not won?"

She hands him the losing ticket

Switched

Hands her back the winner.

Later edited out.

Easy

EDIT: I'm pretty certain he doesnt use actors. He posts in a forum I'm a member of.....(on Yahoo Groups)

You should read his Trick of the Mind book that Camaj mentioned.

Brown says he is only a showman/entertainer himself. Not a magician by any means and says hypnosis is a crock of ****. Pretty much everything he does is based around understanding human psychology and using it to sway people's opinions/actions.
