Bergerac

Apparently series one of the Jersey-centric detective series will be arriving on DVD on 3rd October courtesy of Cinema Club.

Although it's easy to dismiss Bergerac as being all about tax evaders, but there were some pretty good episodes in the series, and John Nettles showed a certain endearing dogged determination as ex-alcoholic and "married to the job" Jim Bergerac.

Bergerac even ventured into scary/supernatural territory at times, and the episodes with Liza Goddard as the jewel thief Philippa Vale were always quite good value.

What does everyone else think of the adventures of the Bureaux Des Estrangers?

They were good & I liked them at the time, but Im not sure how they would have stood the test of time.

Watch the episode 'A Man Of Sorrow' and be blown away! It's like watching a different show.

I liked Bergerac alot but my favourite regional tv detective was "Swallow",the Norwich-based maverick who wasn't afraid to bend the rules when necessary, like driving at 50 mph in a 40mph zone.

A great episode indeed, but you'll have a while to wait. It's part of series six.

Word of warning: the release of Bergerac series one (out yesterday) does not contain the complete episodes. Instead, the DVD set features edited versions cut by about five minutes each shown in afternoon repeats.

This was posted by someone at 2 Entertain on another forum:

I am sorry some buyers have been disappointed by our BERGERAC 1 release on DVD.

We fully researched the BBC's archives for the best versions available, and had been forewarned of daytime edits being in existence.

Our research revealed the original TX edits no longer exist on videotape, either at the BBC or Worldwide archives. The full episodes to exist on film, but this would have been prohibitively expensive to re-telecine for release.

The choice facing us was to release the daytime edits, or avoid a series one release altogether. I felt the latter option would be more attractive to fans of the series.

I do hope the commentaries and remastering work go some way to making up for the disappointment, and hope you all look forward to subsequent releases.

I picked the DVD up on monday, and have watched the first 4 episodes, and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I didn't notice the episodes had been editted, but the again the last time I watched them where probably when they were on TV initially/

Bergerac is still great!! Bit dissapointed about the cuts, but the commentries were really good. Anyone know if the Series 2 will be cut too?

My worry is that they won't release all 9 series (and specials)

Series 2 is due out on 14th August, with the third series to follow on 13th November. No idea about the cut/uncut status of these releases.

Didnt Bergerac have a massive impact in Jersey tourism, people back home here thought it wa a right rough hole with murders every week.

I lived in jersey for 3 years and never once was there a murder, bloody liars.

Yes it had a major impact on tourism...it made the island extremely popular and meant that the States of Jersey did not need to spend anywhere near what they had to spend on advertising. John mentions this in his commentary in Episode 5 (Disk 2) of the box set.

Most people had the sense to realise that there was no real crime issues in Jersey. I for one have spent many happy holidays off the back of seeing Bergerac.

I wonder why it is taking so long between releases?

Do you know if there will be any special features on the future sets?
