The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

Just received my R1 of this from DvdSoon and thought I'd comment on the transfer...

Lovely. Lovely, lovely, lovely. There's a little restoration comparison on the disc and the cleanup is rather de-lovely, whilst not turning the film into a digitally schmoozed softfesten. (Although an impressionistic part of me liked the red push that the film had been subjected to through the ravages of time and naff IPs, particularly the blood-red clouds (!).)

The sound is a little ropey in one sequence (where a weird looping artefact makes the leads sound like they're talking in an echo chamber) but it's minor.

Not a truly great film, and a minor entry on Reed's CV, I know, but I still have a soft spot for Heston and he and Harrison play nicely together. As a study of Michelangelo the film is risible (the way it brushes off his homosexuality is amusing, Chuck commenting that he doesn't "paint" ladies, and the courtesan laughing at the Papal soldier for thinking a "man like Michelangelo" would be in her house) but it could be my imagination running away with me.

Well worth the measly few quid Soon are asking for it.

Heartily agree; beautiful presentation.

Thought the film was ok, but preferred the fresco.
