I've never actually seen Crusade and so will be getting it just for completeness sake.

I liked it, a shame it did not get enough of a run to fully develop. Some of season 1 of B5 makes me cringe, but I watch it safe in the comfort of what it blossoms into.

I've just read the Techno-mage trilogy of novels, which fill in some of Galen's background from Crusace and it made me really nostalgic for the series, cheap though it was. Coupled with some of the info about where the show would have gone available on the web it really sounds like a lost opportunity...

Got any links you could share Jon? I always wondered how they planned on taking the whole 5 year plague thing.

I read a post from JMS suggesting that the plague would be pretty much cleared up sometime mid second season I think, then the story really started!

Unfortunately I don't have the link!

I really liked Crusade but it was too offbeat for the mainstream so was doomed. JMS was too ambitious with this one plot arc wise for the average sci-fi viewer and possibly even for quite a few B5 fans. Music sucked bigtime too.

Yes - I've found the link. It has summaries of the three scripts which were written but not produced. The scripts were available for a while for free at an online e-book company but they went bust.

Many thanks for posting the link. My estimation of Crusade has risen considerably having read these summaries, if only they had been made.

As I read them I could picture the scenes in my mind, the return of Bester included

I feel exactly the same as you after reading the Crusade summaries, and then I wondered how I'd feel about B5 if I had only seen the first few episodes and the pilot...

I do recommend Jeanne Cavellos' techno-mage trilogy for a lot of JMS' background on Galen. it's based on JMS' outline, and while it is has a few flaws, it is far far above the quality of spin-off I expected. I found myself resisting in the first few chapters, but once i got past it, I got seriously involved and seriously moved by the storyline.

Yep the music sucked bit time which I think is agreed by all fans.

However Crusade was doomed before it even aired, TNT who saved B5 and gave us that finale season went under a change of management when Crusade began production. Suddenly instead of dealing with suites that had been fans of the show and wished to see it survive JMS was now dealing with executives that wanted WWF in space. Many things were imposed on JMS that he did not like, even down to petty things like the uniforms had to change. One of the biggest things forced on him was the opening episode. JMS did not want to do an introductory episode as the B5 film A Call to Arms was sufficient to but this also forced on him and he hates this episode. As more and more demands were made JMS finally decided to call it a day and halted production on the show.

IIRC several attempts were made to save the show even by SCI – FI channel but one of the biggest hurdles there was TNT would not sell them the rights to the reruns to B5 that they currently held and the cost of producing the show was out of their reach.

JMS has a history of walking out of shows (as seen again recently in Jeremiah) if the suites push him too far he has done it once or twice in the past. Apparently one of the conditions of him taking part in the Crusade commentaries was he being able to tell his version of the what happened so the price of the set should be worth it for the commentary alone.

Cheers for that Jon. Very interesting to see how the show was going to progress, and certainly adds more to the Earth/Shadow conspiracy.

I just came across this at JMSnews.com,

Looks like the comentaru tracks we were looking forward to have been removed by WB:

Quote:
>I've listened to the commenary and features but I haven't heard anything
>really
>about what happened. Certainly not anything like the story we were told at
>Hawthorne. One wonders if they gave in and let JMS talk about what happened
>and then simply edited it out.

Yes, that's exactly what happened.

I sat down to watch the DVD set yesterday, having picked it up at the local
store, and went to the commentary. I'd put that information at the very start
of my commentary.

Now, understand: what I'd told WB was this....if you want me to do the
commentary, my requirement is that you let me tell what really happened. If
you want to use the commentary, you have to leve that in. If you don't want to
have that in, then don't use the commentary at all. Everybody agreed.

So I started it up...listened...and it was gone.

In its place is a segment taken from the on-camera interview.

This was the one tape they didn't send me for approval, which being busy I
didn't track back, but I was always told there wasn't a problem. At no time
did ANYONE from WB or New Wave Entertainment tell me that this was being done.

Doing these DVDs was the only way I had to date to get the bad taste of that
experience out of my mouth, the sheer dishonesty and rudeness of it all.

So much for that goal.

The term "furious" doesn't even begin to cover it. I'm normally a very quiet,
soft spoken kind of guy.

But last night I broke the sound barrier and the dictionary all at the same
time.

Furious.

You have no idea.

jms
I might wait for the R2 to see if there any difference

Does anyone own the UKR2 version of this and if so, can you confirm if the show is shown fullscreen or widescreen please? All of the reviews for the R1 set state 4:3 but the boxset packaging for the R2 set states 1:1.85 widescreen.

Many thanks.

Both R1 and R2 versions are 4:3. Warner didn't bother to remaster the show in widescreen like they did for Babylon 5 as it was never as popular and so they didn't consider it worth spending the money on. Shame really.

Just been talking about Millennium and this is another show I wish had continued as I think it showed real promise, especially after reading what JMS had planned for the latter half of the series and beyond.
