I've also just watched the first episode, and the picture quality was fine on my 28" W/S TV. The extras on these sets are great too, making them superb value for money for those of us yet to own the amazing Farscape on DVD.

Let's just hope that they sell well, and that all four seasons are released in this format.

I've just done some screen caps for you all to have a look at. I used power DVD at native resolution so 720 x 480 then resized in photoshop (normal bicubic) to 720 x 540 to give the correct aspect ratio before saving in png.

I'd appreciate it if people didn't pass the link out to all and sundry as the bandwidth used could become large.

Video quality on the R1 isn't great though; from what I've been told the R2 should look much better.

Can someone post some caps from the R2? I'm really quite pleased with the Starburst edition picture quality and reviews I've read have said the same so if the R2 is much better, it must be amazing.

I was referring to the DVD of The Peacekeeper Wars, not the TV series. The Starburst editions look pretty good to me. The mini-series on R1 doesn't, on the other hand.

Right, so let me get this straight... (having read through this and several other threads!)
(Farscape newbie here so be gentle with me!)

The R2 complete season sets or the R1 Starburst releases (as they are released) are the ones to get for the 4 seasons of the series... and for Peacekeeper Wars miniseries, best to get the R2 when released next week.

yay/nay?

Nope. You are not alone. I too got all the original R2 releases as they came out.
They take up a lot of shelf space.

It is annoying now when a TV show is released with only 2 episodes on one disc.
The only reason is purely financial gain.

I am more and more attracted to the "slimline" DVD cases (like with Firefly) for box sets.

Do the Farscape Season Boxsets add much over the 2 Disc Volume releases? as I might upgrade as Season 1 and 2 Boxsets are quite cheap at the moment.

Seen as how The Peacekeeper Wars is released on Monday, does anyone know when season 4 will be getting a r2 release as a complete box set? I still haven't seen this season and so obviously need to do so before watching Peacekeeper Wars.

If it follows the last 3 seasons release probably wont come out until November.

Many thanks GPR79

Looking at the specs for the 2nd Starburst release it says:
Quote:
Two new audio commentaries for DNA MAD SCIENTIST (the actors - Ben Browder & Claudia Black), (the producers - Rockne S. O'Bannon & David Kemper)

New audio commentary for JEREMIAH CRICHTON (The "When Bad Things Happen to Good Shows" commentary with Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Rockne S. O'Bannon, & David Kemper)
These don't appear to be on the R2 season one set. Is this correct? (Rewind etc don't have much info for the Farscape releases so just want to be absolutely sure before I decide which to go for! I'm going on the R2 specs list found here). If these are new extras (in addition to including what is on other releases) surely these 'starburst' editions are the releases to get for a newbie like myself, especially as it appears that the pic quality is now on a par with the R2?

Those commentaries aren't on the R2 sets mate so yeah if that info is correct then for a first time buyer I'd say those are the way to go.

BUT: God knows how long it's gonna be until they are done releasing 4 years worth on the Starburst label and then inevitably they will put out a Starburst complete set for each year - my head hurts

This has surely got to be the most re-released series on dvd worldwide ever!

I'm going to attempt to summarise all the info, spread thru this thread, in the first post and then just update it regularly.

A BIG factor for me (being a tight-arse) is that the Starburst editions work out at about £22-£25 per season, almost half the price of the R2 sets - when they are on sale!

and about the retail price of a single 2-disc r2 set on first release, of which you need 5 for one series!

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but someone on the Amazon.com site says that the R1 Starburst Release are flippers !!! (2 eps. per side)

Disappointing if true.

Yes they are 2-sided discs, but not flippers as such. I personally don't have a problem with it, especially if it allows the packaging, and therefore the price, to be smaller. You just have to be a little careful when handling them.
