We should push for van der Vaart aswell as Trabelsi, but yeah 5 million sounds a good price as I watched him when Ajax beat Inter 3-0 and he was VERY impressive. I'm also surprised at the dwindling interest of United in Betis' winger Joaquin as all other possible right wing replacements have gone now (Quaresma -> Barca & van der Mayde -> Inter )

maybe fergie thinks the Ole/Fletcher combo will be good enough to see the season out
one thing that is clear, Fergie is a FAR better judge of players than any of us 'armchair pundits'. You simply can't argue with his record

Van Der Vaart looks impressive indeed, probably valued £10M right now, £20M+ when United starts bidding for him...

How many times did Veron play like a world class midfield player in the last 2 years? What exactly will be missing now that Veron is gone? I think Man Utd are lucky that Chelsea have pots of money and are willing to take a chance on a player that has a very poor record in the Premiership and not much better in the CL.

His performances in the CL last season were world class, and he's been very good in the pre-season. I thought that with Beckham gone, he would flourish in the United midfield this season. There is only Scholes left now who can pass a ball 50 yards or more with decent accuracy - and he would be one of the best to be on the other end of such passes!

There is no way that Veron is worth less than Damien Duff. Chelski have got a bargain.

A world class player, a good squad player. Utd have now lost 2 world class players who were important members of the squad. You need a strong, in depth squad to win the Champions League. Utd need to make signings. If they don't, they will have taken a step backwards this summer IMO.

I have never seen anything from Veron at Manchester United to earn him the tag of "A World Class Player". He has had a few great games but it takes more than that to earn World Class status IMO.

We do have a strong in depth squad. All these players are (IMO) capable of playing for the first team in these positions. The only position we might be a bit light on is forwards.

Carroll
Ricardo
Barthez
Steele

Defenders 10

Ferdinand
O'Shea
Silvestre
G.Neville
P.Neville
Fortune
Kleberson
Djemba-Djemba
Keane
Possibly Trabelsi

Bellion
Solskjaer
Richardson
Fletcher
P.Neville
Butt
Forlan

Forwards 6

van Nistelrooy

and the proven world class players from that list:

GK:
None (yet!)

Def:
Keane

Mid:
Scholes
Giggs

CF:
RVN
Solskjaer

IMO, "they" just need someone to break RVN's leg and United are pretty much fudged...

i don't think you can call Keane a world class defender when he has played there about 4 times in 10 years.

the last year we have relied very heavily on Ruud, thats why we need some cover for him, quality cover - not a reserve forward who could not even get into a sunderland team that scored about 15 goals all last season.

Must admit we were just very lucky that day...

what about

Beating Liverpool, Chelsea and Arse in the FA Cup that season

getting out of the 'group of death' with Barcelona, beating Inter and then THAT performance against Juve in Turin ?

Just listen to yourselves, a majority of you sound like doom and gloom agents!

1) Fergie has a great proven record so have faith

2) There is a huge kitty and wage packet remaining

3) Fergie buys mainly good players (exc. Veron, Jordi Cruyff, Ricardo and Karel Poborsky)

4) We have plenty of good players at the minute

5) Veron was not a real loss and he never performed to his potential

6) Beckham was replaced pretty well last season

7) You only get a worldwide reputation by playing so for god's sake give them a chance and don't count them out before the season has even started

8) Look at the tour results and you'll see Veron was not necessarily needed (i.e. Butt and Neville assisting)

So to all you gloom agents i say lighten up!

...but i must say i am sad to see that Joe Cole has been snapped up by Chelsea
