Horizon: Is alcohol more dangerous than ecstasy?
Heads up - think it's on Tuesday 9pm. Could be interesting. Got a write up in The Observer today.

Is that even a question worth asking?
Of course it is - don't need an Horizon program to tell me that.

It's not just about dying, though, is it? The programme suggested that you're more likely to incur long term brain damage from binge drinking than you are through doing pills.

In all fairness, that's like saying more people involved in car accidents are sober than drunk, so it's safer to drink and drive.
The number of people who drink alcohol is exponentially higher than the number taking ecstasy, so we shouldn't expect the figures to be close.

I think they tried to take into account (a bit) the percentage of users a drug causes harm to. For example, 1 in 2 people who smoke tobacco will die from a smoking related disease. IIRC at least 1 in 10 (so probably an underestimate) alcohol drinkers are alcoholics.

But again, that's not really like for like. How many tobacco smokers are addicted to tobacco, compared to how many alchol drinkers are alcoholics would be a fairer comparison. Or how many smokers die from smoking, compared to how many drinkers die from drinking.

They took into account addiction, deaths, psychological damage, etc to get the overall score for each drug.
