Iconic horror film segments 1920-2000s.

Hi there,

I am doing a university project about audiences and I have to select a film and a clip from that film for each decade from 1920s-2000s. The idea is to show a range of different aged people and see what they think about each clip and it's scariness.

Which horror film from each decade would you consider the best and if there is a segment please tell me in spoilers.

Thanks

90's
Ringu (Not The Ring)

Problem with this is that it doesn't work on it's own without seeing the entire film. I'm sure the same can be said for any you choose, the atmosphere won't have been set.

I agree, but the image alone does remain grotesque and surreal even separated from the slow build of the film. Of course, as a film lover I can't possibly sanction the use of any of them away from their sources. If Clouzot thought I was advocating the spoiling of Les Diaboliques, he'd be spinning in his grave!

Was gonna mention shower scene in Psycho for 60's - Norky beat me to it

Also, for the 80's (well just about) The Shining and Nicholsons character hacking away and the door then HERES JOHNNY!

Something from The Exorcist for the 70's? (having never seen I cant recommend a specific scene) or maybe scene from Jaws.

Some ideas...

1955 - Les Diaboliques

1963 - The Haunting

1977 - Suspiria

1987 - Opera

1998 - Ringu

2005 - The Descent

Tried for a few different styles, but the Argento set-pieces are so good that I couldn't not put them in.

I guess I'd have to suggest:

- The first appearance of Leatherface in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1973)

- The decapitation of David Warner in "The Omen" (1976)

- The sabbat in the woods in "The Devil Rides Out" (1968)

- The surreal conclusion of "Dead of Night" (1945)

- The revelation of where the children of rage are coming from in "The Brood" (1979)

- The crucifix scene in "The Exorcist" (1973)

- The climactic scene in "Rosemary's Baby" (1968)

- The bringing of life in "Frankenstein" (1931)

- The door in "The Haunting" (1963)

- The climactic confrontation between mother and daughter in "Carrie" (1976)

- The climax in the sewers in "Them" (1953)

- The matricide in "Night of the Living Dead" (1968)

- The rape scene in "Deliverance" (1972)

- The climax of "Halloween" (1978)

- The opening double murder in "Suspiria" (1976)

The 1st scene in Saw springs to mind, as does the pre-credits to the Dawn Of The Dead remake.

Can anyone think of any other 1940s films? I am finding it hard to source them.
