I play MKV fine on mine, you do need something like Kodi but that is a bonus that it can run on there, beautifully presented meta data, easy set up and streams over the network no problem.

That's a pretty good spec and price point on Amazons part. Kind of makes a mockery of Apple's newest offering. After all that time they spent dragging their heels and within a week Amazon have usurped them.

I know 4K is still in its infancy but someone like Apple should be leading the way in adopting the format. If they laud their 5k iMacs and make a big deal that the 6s can now shoot 4k then why not embrace the format for the Apple TV?

I'm not surprised though, it took until the Apple TV 3 before they embraced 1080p.

Great! I have the ITV Player sideloaded onto the stick. It works barring a few UI glitches.

Must admit, I'm REALLY impressed with the Amazon Fire Stick I bought with my Tesco Vouchers a couple of weeks ago.

Works, flawlessly, Speed of the UI is fine.
The actual UI itself I find easy to navigate.

I've not done anything to it, or loaded any apps, just using it "as is"
just really amazed at such a cheap little device just works so well.

If I was to have 1 wish.............

I wish the little remote had the tech inside it (which would be easy to do, as others have been doing this for years) to allow you to set it up to turn your TV on/off and alter the TV volume level.

That would just be the icing on the cake then.

This might not help BUT I have a Sony TV and its remote also controls my fire TV. Didn't have to set anything up just chanced upon it.

Just looking at the specs of the new Amazon Fire TV. 4K at 30 fps, not the 60fps the Nvidia Shield TV can handle. What frame rate is most available 4K content at the moment? Presumably 30 for streaming services (Netflix, etc) and 60 will be for 4K Bluray?

Presumably a side loaded Kodi on the Amazon will have he same 30 fps limit?

You wouldn't want 60fps for streaming video surely you want 24fps? 60 would only be relevant for gaming.

Lol the Shield TV can't natively game at 4K. it ain't got the power captain... besides android game textures are not going to scale that far up.

Amazon are stopping selling devices that don't have a Prime App, so you can't buy a chromecast or an Apple TV from Amazon anymore. Wonder if it'll make either have an app, whose fault is it that it doesn't?

Looks like YouTube supports and has 4K 60fps content.

60fps streaming is good for watching video game content e.g. game streams and trailers on YouTube. Not so good for video and film. Still well worth having.

Amazon can make it's own apps for either Android TV/Chromecast or Apple TV but won't because it does not want to pay 30% cut to either for purchases.

This is the problem when you have walled garden inside a walled garden.

The only film content I can think of with a high frame rate was the hobbit film, I was under the impression it didn't catch on?

From what I've read, Amazon doesn't need to pay Google a penny to make Amazon prime work with chromecast, nor does have have to go through the play store.

Here's one article amongst the few I've read that think that;

I dunno it seems Amazon have their panties in a twist as their hardware sales are flat because people would rather have pure android or iOS devices. Amazon have a conflict of interest in their own business model. They can't be like Apple with it's ecosystem while at the same time being like a giant supermarket. Saying that Google devices don't play nicely with Amazon software is a load of tosh as Amazon's entire Fire product line runs Android (reskinned but it's still just Android without Play services)

Roku got a free pass as Instant Video is available in the states, but Amazon seems to have forgotten it's not on UK Roku's due to the fact Sky keep bunging Roku money and they don't want Amazon services on the Roku Channel Store or sideloaded onto Now TV boxes.

Seems like Amazon are currently walking a fine line before Anti-Trust rears it's head. The EU may not be fans of Google but I don't think they like Amazon that much either.
