I always wondered why he knew to go to that specific hotel, or whether it was just irrelevant as the guy would've tracked him down anyway. Haven't watched it for a while now so can't remember why the other chap didn't just deliver the suitcase to the room, though, other than giving Arnie a chance to abuse someone else trying to pick it up.

Because he told Arnie to ''keep moving''.

I know logic takes a holiday in this film, but this scene really takes the biscuit.

And...let's build a dome on Mars out of non bullet proof glass, & give everyone guns, & have it that after the glass has been shot through you have to press a big red button to make it airtight again. I like this film, but you could write a thick book about all the nonsense in it.
I suppose they had to show that the glass was not that strong (perhaps due to relative atmospheric pressure differences between inside/outside) so that, when the air comes rushing in near the end of the film, it can break the windows....otherwise the film would have ended with Arnie and Milena watching everyone inside the complex choke to death.

If you accept that it's a silly secret agent holiday implanted in his head by a travel firm, the plot holes are a bit less offensive. It's not like they'd labour over it.

I suppose it could all be explained away (including Mars turning into a blue-skied Garden Of Eden just by the addition of a big dollop of steam!) by saying it's all just taking place in the mind of Arnie, as they allude to in the end, but then that should be ambiguous, & as it is, it's not: it could only be a dream. That should be enough to get me a media studies degree!

The entire movie requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief. For me it gets away with it because it is brilliant entertainment.

I've never thought it's ambiguous - you've got the Rekall guy saying "blue sky on Mars" and you see Melina on the monitor before he's even put under. Plus you have Dr Edgemar explaining pretty much everything that's happened to him, including his wife and friends turning on him. The only thing that spoils this is that the entire film isn't from Quaid's POV and you have scenes with Richter/Cohaagen and the like. They should've done the whole thing subjectively.

Oh how I long for the day I can kick someone in the balls and say "that's for making me come to Mars, you know how much I hate this ******* planet"! Le sigh.

But Quaid also dreamed about her before he even went to Rekall.

That's true. But what are the chances of a computer figuring out "sleazy and demure" looks exactly like Rachel Ticotin?

I don't know, but it seemed to replicate what his wife and Harry looked like accurately enough from his mind.

But that's because he already knows them, and his mind is extrapolating. In the Rekall lab, he describes what his perfect woman is in all of four words and the computer "makes" Rachel Ticotin - you see her on the monitor as he's going under.

As I remember, Arnold spends the whole film being kicked in the balls, by the end he really does have a couple of ache(rs) (Arnie fans will understand this).

It seems clear from the script that Quaid is meeting his destiny and that Verhoeven being a cheeky devil decides to make it all be a dream by fading out to white at the end, but there are too many unexplained loose ends and hints to definitively suggest it's all a dream. The viewer can decide I feel. That's the beauty of the film isn't it.

"In the German Version the "Johnny Cab"-Robot is making a loud belching sound instead of saying "Hell of a day, isn't it ?" This is possibly an in-joke by the dubbing studio."

Helluva in-joke.

Christ I'd forgotten how much fun this thread was.

Payday Monday so I've decided to treat myself to the Steelbook. I was going to go with the German one, but internet seems to think the Dutch one is the best (115mins) so I'm going to get that one - just under £30 sealed on Ebay.

Just reading this thread reminded me of how I really fancy watching it again. Always loved Sharon Stones performance in this as well, she's excellent.

You're talking about the Blu-ray aren't you?
