You mean they cannot afford to pay what Bernie wanted..

The 3 year deal with channel 4 was £25 million a year in tv rights.
Sky are now paying $150 million a year, which after dollar-> conversion is about a 466% rise in price.

More fool Sky then as the viewing figures must be paltry compared to what BBC/C4 were achieving for live races? (complete guess there btw). Some sites suggests viewing figures dropped by over 3 million viewers but that seems unlikely.

I don't think viewing figures are really the issue.

Sky sell their brand by having the top sport available. Whether people watch it or not is almost a secondary factor.

You'd be a little miffed if you get Sky for football and have no interest in F1 and then they put the prices up, because they've paid over the odds for the F1 rights.

Ecclestone offered the current deal to Sky without even talking to Channel4 and then announced it the week before C4 started their live coverage a few years ago.
The current highlights had to be negotiated with Sky afterwards. It wasn't certain there would be any.

At least C4 have been flexible with their programming. With the races that they are forced to show around midnight they hardly do any chat before starting the action.

Problem I find is that it's virtually impossible to not find out the result these days and with the official F1 Youtube now offering a nice condensed highlights video (sometimes before the C4 highlights show) I just end up watching that, the majority of the time already having had the result spoiled.

I was just browsing to see if it'd be better to drop the HD pack and get Sky Sports, but it looks like we'd lose a load of HD channels.

I can't believe they're not standard.

You can argue Sky pay over the odds for most sports. It's what you have to do when there is so many broadcasters these days. If you like your sports and I'll watch most things (bar Women's netball ) End of the day it's still great coverage and great value. Probably less than a Sat night pub crawl for a month of top quality live and non live action.

I'm in the Falklands at the mo, we get basic UK TV, but on a three hour delay. It's nearly impossible to watch anything important on that delay, unless you stay away from everything. Not sure why basic F1 results should be on the BBC news app.

Dealing with terrestrial, doesn't seem like there is a clammering for the rights. It's turned me into a checking the results type fan though. When the current crop of drivers leaves, probably wont even be that.

Talking of F1 results, it ****** me off when I'm browsing the BBC Football section on a Saturday evening and at the bottom of the articles it links to the BBC Sport stories which often spoils the qualifying result for me if I haven't been in to watch it live.

Keep them separate FFS.

I've actually complained to the BBC before about how they put the results on their website on the front page, there was no need. They just needed a link to the result, not announce the result itself.

I manage it most times.

Bonkers finish.

In unsurprising news, SEB is still a prick.
