Anyone else remember Chris Carter's Millennium?

Hello, all. Hope everyone is coping well with the lock-down. What with one thing and another I've been rewatching a lot of TV shows I don't normally get time to watch. Show's like 24, Burn Notice, Frasier and The X-Files amongst others.

I was rewatching an episode of The X-Files from one if it's later seasons featuring Lance Henriksen's Frank Black character from Millennium and it got me wondering if anyone else remembers this show (Millennium not The X-Files, just to clear that up).

I would be interested in seeing it again, but I remember when it was shown on ITV in the UK that the picture quality was really poor and soft. And I don't remember the VHS being much better. I was hoping that Fox would do to Millennium what they did to The X-Files and remaster the show in HD and widescreen and release it on bluray. But from what I remember Millennium wasn't as well received as The X-Files, so I can't see that happening.

I was just wondering if anyone else liked this show. I remember it being a lot darker than The X-Files and I am tempted to see it again just out of curiosity.

I loved this show, the monster-of-the-week stuff was brilliant, as was the over-arching Millennium plot. Strangely enough I found my own rips of the show I made when looking through a hard drive I found in a cupboard last weekend - I think I made them from the DVDs, so the quality is OK, but it definitely needs an HD remaster.

I think the show was very well received, especially the darker tone, but it kind of lost its way a bit in the second season, before coming to a (definitive) end and being renewed for season 3.

I preferred it to the X Files for a long time and seem to remember I’ve got a signed script somewhere....

There’s a documentary about it available on Amazon Prime - Millennium After The Millennium.

I loved it too, and likewise only ever watched S1-2 on dvd/vhs? and never watched S3 (iirc). I remember reading that it went all supernatural and weird in the final season, but a quick look on IMDB does show quite good ratings still.

Season 1 is the best of the three Seasons 2 & 3 went towards meh as they progressed the nature of the millenium group changed dramatically and left a bad taste in the mouth imho season 3 could not get the magic back

I was just looking at the season 1 boxset the other day considering a rewatch - but putting a DVD on seems so much effort in these streaming times

They were getting cancelled at the end of season 2, I don’t know when they learned that, but it meant they ended up having to rush that plot along and put a proper, definitive ending.

Then they got unexpected renewed for another season meaning they were having to really think on their feet and see where to go.

I genuinely can’t remember much about S3 apart from it all being more than a bit weird given the ending of S2.

Really strange that some shows like this seem caught in a limbo where you can’t get them on any streaming services or buy them in decent quality.

The premise was good but Frank Black spent too much time navel gazing and his wife had zero impact. I bought the set as I loved X-Files but was bitterly dissapointed. Zero magic, Zero rewatchability.

X-Files had humour and pace Millenium just plodded along and should have been put out of it's misery after the first season.

Lone Gunmen however should have gone on longer

Unpopular opinion, but I couldn't disagree more.

I watched a few X-files eps, and whilst I appreciated its production values & creative/intriguing storylines, I just couldn't get into it ... the whole thing was (iirc) just too artificial & convenient, with each character delivering contrived plot summations to the other, when they were really explaining to us (the viewers). All imho, of course.

On the other hand, I really liked the dark cinematic tone of Millennium ... in my mind now, I'm liking it to Se7en, although I'm not sure if it would stack up. But the deliberate 'plodding' pacing was likely ahead of it's time, and more suited to a streaming binge-watch.

It did have some very dark storylines and yes, there were comparisons to Se7en at the time. They had a couple of lighter episodes, but I thought it was a very different thing to the X Files and allowed Carter to have that more sinister tone throughout.

FWIW i liked both, but like others have said, I’d need to rewatch Millennium as other than that first season and the finale its all a bit sketchy.
