The Gentlemen (Guy Ritchie)

Surprised there's no thread for this as it was out on 1st Jan.

Looks plenty of fun with Hugh Grant in particular hamming it up. Anyone seen it yet?

Decided against seeing it after reading some awful reviews. Staying at home to watch Marriage Story instead.

Kermode didn't seem to like it and given Ritchie's patchy filmography I'll see it on netflix

Saw it today.

Proper stinker, Ritchie needs a good movie soon as he is on a shocking run.

The reviews are actually too kind to this.

I presume you are referring to quality rather than money making but his last movie made over a billion. That will give him at least ten more years of work.

As we all know in the movie game, box office hits don't mean 'good film'

Also Aladdin for a director is like a free pass.

I know, that was my point. He's a mediocre white male director so with a big hit he'll be guaranteed employment for a decade. See Michael Bay for further details.

Also that is not me being "woke" here. Just stating facts.

Are you going to say the same about Charlie's Angels director Elizabeth Banks then? She scored another gig after flopping hard with CA.

Well she's directed two films, one a hit and one a flop and might possibly be directing a new movie (not confirmed yet?), all after long successful career as an actress and a producer. You've found a terrible example of a woman director being given a second chance. Well done.

I'll wait here for your full list of consistently working non-white male directors who have got long filmography of terrible films.

You brought race and gender into it which you shouldn't have.

I don't care about a bad or good director's race or gender but as you do I'll let you compile your own list

I'll take it back and apologise if someone can prove to me that I'm wrong. However, not that it really needs pointing out, there are plenty of incredibly talented white male directors who also have been denied a fair crack of the whip whilst the likes of Brett Ratner get all the juicy studio jobs.

Neither do I. I just want to see good films.

Err as far as I knew since the scandal Brett Ratner wasn't getting anymore work or is he indeed making more studio films and I just wasn't aware of them.

I know. I was just pulling a prime example out of the air. It took a sex scandal to stop people employing him. The fact that he was hack churning out average films didn't seem to matter at all. McG is another example.

I liked the look of this from the trailer, it seemed like a lot of fun, albeit seemed like he was re-treading Lock Stock/Snatch territory. I've been put off by the reviews I've read though which is a shame.

Amazing that Ritchie has retreated back to Lock Stock/Snatch/RocknRolla territory, it's like the last 22 years didn't happen or no-one showed him the 'It's a Right Royal Barrel of Cockney Monkeys' sketch from The Fast Show.

It isn't "that" bad... although it was one of those to see because there was nothing else on. Seems to be another one dividing critics/audience.

Not really a fan of Ritchie, but it did make me laugh, most of the cast are pretty good and was quite an entertaining few hours, worth seeing just for Hugh Grant & Colin Farrell

Its also made me think about critical v audience reviews again. Robbie Collin really liked this movie but hated JoJo Rabbit which seems to be the exact opposite view held by people I know who've seen both.

Unlimited card means I do watch a lot of films I wouldn't normally bother with, if a film is dividing critics and audience that usually makes me want to go and see it

Critics bad reviews don't stop me from seeing something, the trailer for this did put me off but I quite enjoyed it, certainly seen a lot worse!

Once you get past the first 20 minutes where he seems to throw in as many cockneyisms as he can it's actually really enjoyable. It's got some brilliant one liners in it and I did enjoy the performances on the whole.
