sega released an augmented reality sandpit a while ago, so the technology is there and has been for some time, people have just been working out the best ways to actually use it. I mean if we think about how long VR has actually been around for, it's just working out how to actually use it best.

The big advantage with the system MS have is that it is less likely to cause travel sickness feeling you get from systems that completely immerse you.

Although I want this to be good, well any VR because its what I have been waiting for for 30 years, they said the same about Kinect and that turned out to be a bit rubbish!

been running windows 10 since the first tech preview and it's really really nice. no problems at all. however, there was a 'critical update' yesterday and it stopped my machine from waking up from standby. i had to roll back using system restore.

anyone else hit the same problem?

Not tried the preview yet but looking forward to it.

A quick question...they've said that anyone with 7 and 8 will get a free upgrade in the first year. Have they clarified how that'll work? If I installed it, but in a years time I decide to do a spring clean and reinstall Windows fresh, will I still be able to validate it? Will they be doing some sort of validation with older licenses to ensure the ones that were entitled to the free upgrade still are? I have Windows 8 Pro.

I've not read anything specific to that level of detail, but generally it's understood all versions (even pirated) of 7 and 8 will be able to upgrade to 10 free of charge.

I'd like to think that's just an upgrade and if you want a clean install you'll need to use your original (paid for/OEM) licence code to install from scratch. That way you get most people onto 10 without unduly annoying those that paid for their version.

So just what can these preview builds do ?
How finished are they ?
For day to day internet and basic steam gaming, would it be ok to run ?

Do a full clean install of Windows 7 and then immediately upgrade it to windows 10 should give you a fairly clean installation still.

The main problem is you typically can't upgrade from preview builds to the full version.

Whereas the release version will usually upgrade your previous OS.

So by installing a preview build, you force a re-install upon yourself in the future.

It does everything your Win7/8 already does and so far has been very stable. Mine updated itself today to the new build via Windows Update too.

You get the little Preview message in the bottom right of the screen but that's it.

As mentioned above, don't rely on it for when the gold version is dropped. You will likely need to reinstall from scratch.

Geez, the icons seems to get worse with every build

The Bin icon on 10041 looks like it was designed for Windows 3.1, luckly i found a nice icon pack to bring it back to Win7/Win8 and it looks far more polished now

They still haven't fixed the windows problems, the windows don't snap to the edge of the screen and when you have multiple windows and you do a side by side it thinks it has one more window than actually there and there's empty space where you can see the desktop....lazy as ****

Haha, that's what I noticed as well. It's like they got a child to design the recycle bin icon.

I spotted that too... the recycle bin looks ridiculous.

At least they've fixed the calculator, which for some reason didn't work in the last build.

There has been further clarification since the original announcement - https://www.yahoo.com/tech/microsoft...730456889.html

Notably; you have be on Win7 SP1 not Win7 and "commercial/business" licenses don't qualify for the free upgrade.

I assume it's possible to run a preview copy of Win10 on a virtual machine to see what it's like ?
