Better Call Saul - Breaking Bad spin-off

For those of us already preparing to mourn the loss of one of the greatest shows of the new millennium (ever?), is this news too good to be true?

It's been greenlit and is actually happening! Plus it's a prequel, so Saul's fate remains unknown.

I'm mostly excited by the idea but part of me wories that it could be a bad move, more Joey than Frasier.

Official Press release out today..

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...l-saul/282179/

Quote:
Los Angeles, CA – July 11, 2014 – AMC released today from the Television Critics’ Association (TCA) Press Tour two new photos from the set of the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, currently in production in Albuquerque, NM. The photos feature series stars Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean. In addition, the network confirmed the line-up of series regulars for Saul, set to premiere in early 2015. Joining Odenkirk are Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad, Wiseguy) as “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut, McKean (This is Spinal Tap) as Chuck, Rhea Seehorn (Franklin & Bash, House of Lies) as Kim, Patrick Fabian (Big Love, Grey’s Anatomy) as Hamlin and Michael Mando (Orphan Black, The Killing) as Nacho – characters that will represent both legitimate and illegitimate sides of the law.

Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad. Gilligan and Breaking Bad writer and producer Peter Gould created the show together and serve as co-showrunners of the premiere season. The series is set six years before Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut (Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “criminal lawyer.” The series’ tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.

As previously announced, Breaking Bad creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan directed the first episode of the series, which has already been greenlit for a second season of 13 episodes. The debut season will consist of 10 episodes.

Better Call Saul is executive produced by Gilligan, Gould, Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Diner, Rain Man) and Melissa Bernstein (Breaking Bad, Rectify, Halt and Catch Fire) with Breaking Bad alums Thomas Schnauz and Stewart A. Lyons as co-executive producers for Sony Pictures Television.

It's interesting that they're selling it as a light hearted romp, quite a far cry from the darkness of the last season of Breaking Bad.

Still it's Vince Gilligan and he didn't put a foot wrong with the final season of Breaking Bad whilst under all the scrutiny of the modern internet, something The Wire and the Sopranos didn't have to deal with. So I'll watch the entire season of this no matter how it seems, quality wise, at any point.

I listened to a podcast recently with Bob Odenkirk (Nerdist) and he said that the show is very much a drama with comedy as opposed to the other way around, when the original intention was to be more light hearted.

Will be interesting to see how it turns out, but I've got faith in Vince!

Looking forward to this. Saul is a great character. Hope they pull it off. One thing I don't get is that Mike is in the trailer. So that will be way back before he was involved with Gus then?

It's already on UK Netflix. I hope they continue this trend every week. IIRC the last season of Breaking Bad appeared sometime in the evening between 7:00 and 8:00 PM.

Better Call Saul - Breaking Bad spin-off

Double episode this week, one today then one tomorrow then weekly on Tuesdays.

Edit: just watched the first episode and it's not bad at all.

It was even better than I'd hoped. Perfect mix of comedy and drama, gorgeous cinematography that really captured the original Breaking Bad vibe. Had me both laughing and on the edge of my seat in parts. Can't wait for the next one.

I might have missed something obvious or be making stuff up but
