[Music] (up to) 6 months free streaming at Rdio.com

Rdio - www.rdio.com - the streaming music service from the co-creator of Skype, is now offering listeners up to six months of free music on the Web. New Rdio listeners can sign up and activate free streaming at rdio.com, with no credit card required, then browse Rdio's library of over 18 million songs.

Free streaming is available through the Web or Rdio’s desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and allows listeners to:

● Choose from over 18 million songs, without ads

● Listen free on the web for up to six months, depending on how many songs you stream

● See and hear what your favorite artists are listening to

● Discover new music by following friends and tastemakers

● Create, curate, and collaborate on playlists

● Share your life soundtrack in real time on Facebook and Twitter

A meter at the top of user profile pages lets people know how much free music they have remaining each month. It’s easy to upgrade any time to one of Rdio’s subscription plans for unlimited streams and access to Rdio’s acclaimed mobile apps. Plan options include:

● Rdio Web: Ł4.99 a month. Unlimited Web streaming.
● Rdio Unlimited: Ł9.99 a month. Unlimited Web and mobile streaming, as well as wireless syncing to listen offline

I think it is just for the web (or desktop app) side of things. And I don't think it's unlimited - you appear to get a quota which you can use over a month or stretch it over 6.

Ah ok. I did use a month trial a while back but when it expired I couldn't use it without paying. Presumably they're giving the free one to compare to Spotify.

From what I remember it's a very nice interface, very tidy and user friendly. Shame there are no addons for Squeezebox as I'm looking at getting Spotify because it does have one.

I use spotify a lot to find new music, and as far as i can see Rdio doesn't offer recommendations based on what you're listening to - which is a shame.

I pay for spotify already, and can't see anything that'd make me change to this - has anyone noticed any particular advantages over spotify ?

I don't really know enough about these things to be much help. I'm told:

"See and hear what your favorite artists are listening to, discover new music by following friends and tastemakers"

... so I imagine they're going down the social recommendation route. There's talk of The Music Fix hooking up with them to become one of their 'tastemakers' (ha!) so watch this space I suppose.

For info: done a bit more digging.

Although it doesn't do recommendations in the same way Spotify does (the emphasis is on following friends, musicians, record labels, etc. and checking out what they're listening to) there is a 'related artists' tab so, for example I've just pulled up Bad Religion and it lists NOFX, Anti-Flag, Millencolin, Good Riddance and so on which seems fair enough.

Something newer: Jack Bugg - it 'suggests' Ren Harvieu, Dry The River, Beans on Toast, Keaton Henson.
