Anyone tried a Project Genie, or is it worth paying the extra for a debut? Hopefully will be getting a new turntable/phono stage in a few months time (to replace this)and the genie looks much more 'girlfriend-friendly' for the living room

don't dismiss getting a Technics 1200/1210, top quality deck that has a lot of love on many HiFi forums, I paid for a new one but if your hunt around there are loads for sale

do your homework & speak to people that own them

I use a 1200 with a Shure N97 cartridge. It sounds great.

I've been working with a company doing vinyl re-issues for the last couple of years. It's really nice getting these 180g double albums in the post after years of CDs... it's just not the same. Yes, comparatively expensive but I reckon not too expensive - it's akin to the days of laserdisc vs VHS... it's a niche format but they have been selling quite well.

www.vinyl180.com

I'm currently working on a vinyl re-issue of XTC's Skylarking which should be good because during the mastering a mistake has come to light that has been present on all previous vinyl and CD copies of the album... something about "phase" and crossbeams going out of skew on the treadle!

You can read about it here if you're so inclined

Those look really nice - tempted with The Cult/The Fall. There's nothing quite so lovely as 180g vinyl.

Picked up a lovely double album from Help the Aged today. Deutsche Grammophon Beethoven, eighth and ninth symphonies. Very good condition and only 50p!

Had a 1210 for (my DJ) years, but my brother has it now. Bit too big for my hi-fi rack now... where's the old fogie smilie

Nice thread - my 1210's, well I lent one to a mate, and the other is gathering heaps of dust and used to stand a fan on during the summer. Just wanted to say, 1210's used to get slammed by audiophiles when compared to the equivalent hi-fi turntables for that price. The reason they were so popular amongst DJ's is because they were ROCK solid and could withstand tons of abuse. I used to use Ortofon needles on mine, but they are expensive and break so easily.

Vestax apparantly gave great sound, so if for whatever reason you're desperate for a DJ Deck as part of your HI-Fi, go with that. I used to buy tons of vinyl and receive lots of it. Now all my Promos come on CD or via digital downloads. I do get the urge to buy the odd one here and there, my Michael Jackson and Madonna stuff is probably worth a pretty penny now. But it's the cost really that I can't justify anymore.

The tech inside the 1210 is no different to many Technics Hi Fi decks. I used to own a 30 year old 1700 mark I. It was still a direct drive like the 1200/1210's. Some people use replace the arms but I haven't had a need to and just used a decent Hi Fi cartridge. They both sounded very similar.

I've got a Genie, bought it a couple of years ago when I got an itch to rejump into vinyl. Very elegant and simple deck, I bought a different stylus to the default and don't have any urge to upgrade again. Nice simple deck and sounds lovely through an old ebay NAD 3120 - at least for the sort of music I listen to (americana, old blues and old rock n roll).

Only a couple of years late ... #111/666

Doesn't really show up but it's a silver-mirrored sleeve.

It is pretty nice but I don't want to give the impression that this is my company or anything... I'm just involved with the design side of things (including the rudimentary website).

Speaking of which I've just updated the Numan artist page on the V180 website to include the new releases.

Another thing I was involved with was the XTC / Dukes of Stratosphear Complete and Utter... vinyl/CD box set which is very nice too.

The new issue of MOJO (or at least a version of the new issue) comes with a ... cough splutter ... full blown 12" album featuring interpretations of the entire LET IT BE album. £12.99, so not bad value all told.
