I just remembered one of the best covers ever, Signs by Tesla from the Five Man Acoustical Jam live album.

The wonderful and completely underrated Czars have just released a whole album of covers which includes beautiful versions of Leavin' on Your Mind (Patsy Cline), Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) and Angel Eyes (Abba!) amongst other gems. I'm not really a fan of covers albums but i'll make this one the exception. Check it out!

Steely Dan's Doctor Wu covered by The Minutemen. I reckon it's a hundred times better than the original.

Had forgotten about that - Bit more of a reinterpretation I guess, but great with it

Hadn't heard The Futureheads covering Fit But You Know It, am interested in hearing that.

Everyone goes on about the China Drum cover. I never thought it was that good.

Check out Angra's cover instead. Superb.

Wasn't really a cover, more a remix. There are many I love but honourable mentions must go to :-

Fiona Apple - Across The Universe (The Beatles)
Pitchshifter - Making Plans For Nigel (XTC)
Manics - Suicide Is Painless/Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (they do superb covers in general)
Snow Patrol - Crazy In Love

Worst would possibly go to Arctic Monkeys for their version of Love Machine (dire!)... there are many more but I could be here forever!

It is sort of a cover though, as The Futureheads play all the music and sing 'backing' to the original Mike Skinner vocal. It's a right laugh anyways and well worth a punt.

Just thought I'd hunt down some of the covers mentioned here and came across this podcast which looks interesting if you like good (or bad) cover versions.

MetalGearAl was right - Bill Shatner's Tambourine Man is something to hear - never thought anyone could sound that angry! I'm not saying it's the best cover version ever though...

Come to think of it, his Common People is pretty good too!

Worst cover ever - Strawberry Fields Forever by Candyflip. I still haven't forgiven them.

Candyflip. Just when you've forgotten them someone mentions them. Shower of muppets.

My favourite is Therapy?'s cover of Diane.

Worst is the All Saints destruction of Under the Bridge.

Great song. Their cover of Joy Divisons Isolation off Troublegum is fantastic as well.

Therapy?'s cover of Diane would be right up there on my 'bad' list (and I like Therapy?). 'Diane' is just one of those songs that shouldn't be covered - it's unlikely to even approach the original never mind better it. I would implore anyone who's only ever heard the Therapy? version to seek out the original on Husker Du's 'Metal Circus' E.P. You'll thank me...

Just been browsing www.coversproject.com - there are some terrible ideas for covers out there.... Can't wait to hear a few of these...

Bon Jovi - Sylvia's Mother
Barbara Streisand - Left in the Dark
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child of Mine
Linda Ronstadt - We Will Rock You
Snoop Dogg - We Will Rock You
Tori Amos - '97 Bonnie & Clyde

As for one of the best - Flaming Lips' version of Life on Mars by Bowie is a masterpiece...

Worst must be 'Tide is high' by Atomic Kitten.
As for best, well there are so many. However, in recent memory I loved the Live Lounge where Elbow did Amerie's '1 Thing'. If anyone knows where to get a copy of that I'd love it if you'd let me know!
