Shatners version of 'Rocket Man' is brilliant because it's so bad!

Best cover ever is probably Saint Etienne's take on Only Love Can Break Your Heart.

That's the brilliance of Shatner - You need to check out Mr Tambourine Man too

The covers - Straight Outta Compton, Bitches Ain't *** and Hurt - mentioned so far are all great.

Any votes for Avril Lavigne's cover of Chop Suey?

Never had the pleasure of hearing that. I still remember her 'memorable' rendition of Fuel on Metallicas MTV Icon

Is it Phish/Les Claypool's version? Sort of countryish slant on it? Just heard that yesterday for the first time. Funny. Heard a good version of the Stranglers "Strange Little Girl" by Tori Amos recently which was pretty impressive.

Worst... it seems there's one everyweek by one of these newfangled teeny groups that sinks lower that the last. Does Witneys version of Dolly Partons "I will always love you" count as a cover that would win hands down any bad song competition.

The Australian Doors version of Stairway To Heaven isn't too bad. Same goes for Tori Amos' Smells like teen spirit

Jo Whiley's had a few crackers on her show over the last few years. Some of my favourites:

Jamelia - Numb (Linkin Park)
Jamie Cullum - Frontin' (Pharrell Williams)
Foo Fighters - Lyla (Oasis)
Elbow - Independent Woman (Beyonce)

In addition to the ones already mentioned in this thread, i'd also give an honourable mention to:

Lost Prophets - Cry Me A River (Justin Timberlake)
Sonic Youth - Superstar (The Carpenters)
Faith No More - I'm Easy (The Commodores)
Fatih No More - War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Faith No More - I Started A Joke (Bee Gees)
Marilyn Manson - The KKK Took My Baby Away (The Ramones)
Tom Waits - Return of Jackie & Jusie (The Ramones)
Pearl Jam - Masters Of War (Bob Dylan)
Metallica - Turn The Page (Bob Seger)
Metallica - Last Caress/Green Hell (Danzig)

And the controversial two.....

Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar (Thin Lizzy)
The Darkness - Street Spirit (Radiohead)

Well I like them.................i'll get me coat

Roxy Music's Jealous Guy is certainly one of the very best covers (Bryan's These Foolish Things" is up there too) and the Beach Boys' Sloop John B.

Worst? Bit obvious, but Mariah Carey murthering Without You is probably at the bottom of the pit.

As already mentioned by Ulkesh, Shatner's Common People is just so, well, right.

I'd forgotten about that one. Pet Sounds is one of my favourite albums and if it wasn't for that track I'd say it was near perfection.....what were they thinking.

Apparently it was Al Jardine's idea, originally. I'd accept the argument that it does stand apart from the rest of Pet Sounds as a (whisper it) concept album and as a cover version but - heck - I just love it to bits. Much better than one of Al's later bright idead (Cottonfields) and Mike Love honking on Rock & Roll Music (sets my teeth on edge).
