I recently downloaded some free 'grisoft' antivirus software after my norton antivirus ran out - it consequentl picked up a trojan dialler on first scan.

Now would spyware pick up a trojan dialler or only antivirus software only? Is there a difference between the two?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your efforts, but would you highlight the progs that are also popup stoppers, or do all the spyware progs do this anyway?

Also, what is svchost? I saw it mentioned earlier and remembered when I tried XP that this was trying to access the internet. Should it be doing this, or should I have disallowed it in my firewall. I think I remember that internet access was not working if I disallowed scchost.

I've started having a problem recently with my homepage being changed each time I re-boot to 'search-town' search page.

I've got Norton AV & Zonealarm firewall on all the time so thought I was protected against this type of thing.
I've tried using Spybot, Adaware, Startpage Guard, Trojanhunter & CWshredder to fix the problem but although most of them said they located and repaired some problems (obviously others which I knew nothing about) the 'search-town' thing continues each time I re-boot.

Has anyone else had this same problem ? If you have, and you have managed to sort it, could you please, please, please let me know how you did it !!

Hey

I am currently on the work computer and it is filled with spyware, takes ages to get anywhere due to all of the pop ups.

The problem is I am not allowed to install software on the system so are any of these just executables that I can just run without having to actually install.

Cheers

Chris

svchost.exe is your problem.I had the same little so and so,and removed it by wiping;i can't remember if i had to use a 'safe-mode' start, but if you can't access it with windows loaded, you'll know the answer.

EDIT:Applies to Win 95/98 only.

Did a search for svchost - and read that you should not delete this.

Here is a link for info on this from Microsofts site

So should this be deleted or not - me confused

I've just run Spybot tonight, and it produced a list of stuff, most were pre-selected, so I removed these. But it had a load of Backweb lite items, these werent seleceted. How do I know which of these I can delete? As from what I've found out, some are needed, but some arent.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply Dr_Fruitbat,

I ended upposting the same question on a couple of other (more computer orientated) forums and the good people there sorted my problem.

Thanks anyway,

Jock

recently I've had a number of pron sites appearing in my favouriites - tried deleting them, deleting cookies, clearing temp. internet folder etc. but that didn't work. Have since tried adaware, spybot, spysweeper and hijack this with no luck - the links appear as favourites once I restart the PC.

Any help much appreciated

Download 'Hijackthis', run it, save the log then post it on the relevant forum at http://spywarewarrior.com/. The good people there will then talk you through what to do next.

I downloaded all the programmes but could not get rid of registry changes that were found by CWShredder.I then found This Programme

I installed it,and used the info of the exact problem locations it gives in the registry to manually remove things using regedit. If you want the programme to do it yourself you will have to pay for it.

Ooohhh, I'm having fun today.

Whever I start my browser up, it only shows a Peach coloured site called "www.hitpointer.com". I can't get off it, or access any other sites.

I've run most of the apps on the first page, but to no avail.

Any ideas?
