Oscar nominated director Roman Polanski is facing a campaign to boycott his film The Pianist - by a British action group. The Phoenix Survivors group lobby for children's protection rights and are organizing a backlash against convicted statutory rapist Polankski. The Polish director fled America in 1977 when he was found guilty of having sex with a 13-year old girl and the group is disgusted that his latest offering has excited so much acclaim in light of his crime. Spokesperson Shy Keenan urges British audiences to avoid watching the Holocaust film. She says, "To those who have turned their blind eye, who are you to forgive? Would you if it was your child? It is an astonishing and perverted irony that The Pianist should be nominated alongside Chicago with its storyline based on how a man set out to make a murderer so famous that, in the end, no one, could convict or punish them for their crime. They may forgive the crime, even if they were not the victim of it, but unless you treat the sickness the crime will happen again."
dirty old man!

I wanted LOTR to win, 2 amazing films now and not one award for Best Director or Best Picture!

Goblin, see here for more on Polanski & the sex scandal.

One day someone will probably make a movie of his fascinating life story. How many people can list having survived the Holocaust, becoming a celebrated filmmaker, enduring the butchery of their famous (not to mention pregnant) wife by Charles Manson's gang & then becoming an exiled sex-offender all within one lifetime?

All really rather sad when you think about it.

The Pianist also scooped the main awards at the French Cesars last week - Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

Not really. THE PIANIST is exactly the sort of film which wins awards. I'm glad anyway because Polanski is one of the very greatest directors.

i.e. dull as dishwater.

...Only kidding, I'm looking forward to seeing The Pianist and I'm glad the BAFTA didn't fall for the Chicargo hype, I had to suffer that yawnfest as the missus insisted on going to watch it, I wish. I'd taken some knitting needles and a blowtorch so that I could relieve the boredom by poking my eyeballs with hot needles.

Why, because they might be celebrating genuinely good films rather than overhyped, tedious literary adaptations ?

Of course, they might decide to give awards to mediocre crap as usual, but it's worth pointing out that popularity isn't the same as quality.

whoa.. i detect a LOTR non-believer here.. seriously LOTR IS good.. over hyped drivel my foot..

although stuff like Chicago to me is total tripe.. The pianist is NOT and deserves the win this year.. Hey mike ROTK in your eyes might deserve the wins next year ( i hope) anyway win or lose they will still be classed as one of the best trilogies EVER.. simple
