Something else to consider - HDMI Headphones - https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/h...es/mdr-hw700ds

I have something similar but an older model. Basically the base unit produces lossless audio but will be slightly lossy when transmitted wirelessly to the headphones.

Connects via HDMI. And has number of virtual surround options. These things are built for watching movies.

This is one point where the Samsung guy was evasive. The Sony woman seemed quite certain that if a headphone jack of the transmitter was plugged into a headphone socket of the TV, it would mute the soundbar in the same manner as with a receiver. The Samsung guy was not certain about it.

The other thing is that the Sennheiser RS175's transmitter has a separate on-off switch. I wonder if I have to physically unplug the transmitter from the TV to make the Soundbar work normally or can I simply switch off the transmitter? The latter would be more convenient.

LG allow audio to go from optical output / internal speakers AND headphones. It need not mute it for other outputs.

OK, but the whole purpose of wanting headphones is so that the external sound gets muted.

The way I am thinking is - with the BD player, Sky Box and CD player plugged directly into the soundbar and with the Soundbar's HDMI-out going to the TV, the audio signals originating from those devices (BD player, Sky box etc), will reach the soundbar before the TV.. Even if I have plugged a headphone transmitter into the TV, how can the soundbar 'know' that and go silent? Or, can a 'smart' TV detect that it has headphones plugged into it and send out signals via the ARC facility to mute the Soundbar?

Key point being "need not" I am pretty certain you can select the behaviour (it has X + Y or X OR Y in the option list of my tv)
