So erm, like, you know, fer shure. Did anyone watch the whole season? Is it worth another look over the summer? It was one of the only "freshman" hits this tv season it seems although I'm not sure what that says about tv in general right now.

Its very good, once you move past the pilot. The plot moves at such a speed though and they aren't scared of killing off people, even popular stars get killed.

It's really not bad Richie, you should watch it just for Ian somerhalder who seems to be giving a performance that's quite a good immitation of Rob Lowe from the early 80's, but as a vampire.

Anyway it's become my guilty pleasure too, even though it's more Vamp opera than fright fest.

I had been badgered by a mate to watch this as I had done the same to him over Supernatural. Have watched the first 7 episodes and man I gotta say I take back what I said in my opening post this show is actually quite good.

Although every time Damon is on screen i just see Boone from Lost, and Stefan just has the squarest jaw every to grace a TV screem.

I have JUST finished watching Season 1 on blu-ray and I take back every stupid, awful thing I said about it last September! This is fantastic tv; really well written, engaging likeable characters (even the baddies!) and a plot that doesn't slow down for a second all the way through to the killer season cliffhanger!
Now yes, the pilot and next episode are the weakest with the cheesy fog machine in full force and the daft crow thing but I was totally hooked by the end of episode 4 (when the first "big reveal" of the mythology comes). The show finds it's sure footing incredibly quickly for a new series and I have to say it's just superb. It reminds me of how much I used to enjoy Buffy and Angel first time around. It's use of genuinely surprising plot twists as well as introducing and actually answering all the big questions it throws up is refreshing. The lead girl is very cute and easy to root for (as are her two friends Caroline and Bonnie) and the show is filled with an obscene amount of sexy young men! There's even a few dilfs too!
I just hope season 2 can keep it going and not hit that "sophomore slump" ('The OC', I'm looking at you)!

Right then, 2 episodes into Season 2 and this is still full steam ahead!
Anyone who ever enjoyed Buffy and Angel needs to start watching this! It's a billion times better than that anaemic Twilight **** and you know what, I actually enjoy it more than 'True Blood'! It's certainly better plotted that's for sure.

Quote of the week from Elena:
"Nothing about my life is normal. My best friend is a witch, my boyfriend's a vampire and I have a doppleganger who's hell bent on destroying all of us!"

Steady on there! I really like it, particularly the plotting which is capable of surprising me fairly often. I love that things change, people die and no-one is kept in the dark about everything for years (grumble grumble Smallville grumble). Add to that the very photogenic cast (one or two of whom can even act!) and the slightly ridiculous not taking itself too seriously vibe and you've got a very watchable show. It doesn't have the wit or originality of Buffy though, nor the insanity of True Blood, and compared to either it just comes off as bland IMO.

Up to epsiode 15 now and I love the way the plot just keeps moving forward, gone are the Dawson Creep stuff from the first few epsiodes and instead we are getting a lovely and rich story arc.

One thing that is stopping this from being great is that there is no wit or dark humour that was found in Buffy and Angel. Stephan is a dark brooding Vampire but is but has none of the charm and wit of Angel who had great one liners and wasn't afraid to rip of someones head.

But if you enjoy Buffy/Angel, Supernatural or to an extent True Blood then you are likely to enjoy this.

Okay finished watching season 1 and seen the first of season 2, I kind of regret watching this show now, it has been so good that I would love to have discovered this five years down the road and watch it over a few weeks like I did with Supernatural.

One season had more plot then most other shows manage in two or three seasons, there was no crap episode after the fist handful. And I have to agree a bit with Richie about the True Blood stuff, Vamp Diaries not only has good plotting of its story arc but also real motivation for some of the characters.

Damon seems like a real cock but after seeing his full story you can see why the brothers are the way they are. And I have to say Ian Somerholder is just superbly cast he really seems to look like he is enjoying what he is doing.

And why does the doppelgänger look so much hotter?

Having also just finished watching S1 on blu-ray, I have to mirror every exact thing you said. I hated the first couple of episodes & dropped it but several friends stuck with it & insisted I give it a second go. When the blu-ray became available at a cheap price & couldn't resist & glad I did.

I still prefer True Blood & it doesn't come close to the dialogue & wit of Buffy/Angel, but it sure blows away that godawful Twilight ****.

Just started S2 & it continues to entertain. Does it remain good enough through to the end of S2?

Yes it remained consistently good throughout season 2 (although the mythology does start to get overly complicated a tad). I think I preferred to watch a season in quick succession as there's so much plot to remember, watching Season 2 as it aired was less fun overall as there were so many breaks and that kills the momentum (even on ITV2 there were several long gaps as it was week on week with the US airings). Deffo a good show for blu-ray given the great production values too.

Season 2 is better then season 1 with more focus on vamp law and mythology.........

More powerful characters and less focus on just school kids .

Well that's me dusted Season two & hungry for the upcoming new series in a couple of week's time.

I'd probably say S2 is on par with S1. Yes the bad-guys are nastier & the Dawsons Creek school scenes are dialled back, but for every cool new Big-Bad, there's a cringeworthy cheesy moment (Caroline's Bangles karaoke anyone? )

Also, it's got really silly with Mystic falls populated with more monsters than humans it seems. It does get bonus points however for the consistent way they just nonchantly kill main characters willy-nilly at the snap of a finger (or in this case, neck, a LOT!)

Guilty-pleasure tv-viewing of the highest calibre.

Reasonable opener for S3. I enjoyed Stefan's take on playing darts, the "head" scene regarding his ripper exploits & horny Caroline casually tossing aside drunken jocks.

I assume Richie hasn't commented yet as he's still recovering from Damien's soap-sud naked opening scene.
