Lots of flashy images, no dialogue, style over substance.

Count me in then

It's not this one then that I just watched:

http://www.revolverthemovie.com/trailer.html

I thought it looks a bit different to a Guy Ritchie movie! Then I just saw this:

http://www.revolverthemovie.co.uk/

And thought, that's more like it!

Yep, Empireonline seem to be hiding it, but it looked pretty cool.

Nice to see that bloke out of the Sopranos in it

Vincent Pastore. One of Tony's main henchmen - the first bloke you see in the trailer.

"Guy Ritchie's Revolver" no less

Looks like the ownership title curse of death* might have started already.

It'll have to be a lot better than Lock Stock..., Layer Cake has raised the bar massively on the Brit gangster flick!

Layer Cake wasn't a gangster movie though, but it has indeed raised the 'crime movie' bar.

In the immortal words of Wayne Campbell: "Are you mental?"

Layer Cake:

drug dealers
drug deals gone awry
lethal foreign criminals and hitmen
people with silly nicknames
flash motors
inept henchman
copper's narks
"legit" businessmen with ties to the underground
glamorised (sp?) violence
hot girls who will land you in trouble
endlessly quotable ("shaggin females is for poofs")

If that isn't a british gangster movie, i don't know what is.

I still think it is a 'British crime' movie, rather than a gangster movie. The main character isn't a gangster, he runs a business based in what would be concidered the 'underworld' but he doesn't fit the normal image of a gangster. Which would involve confidence in both violence and dealing with crime, as far as I am concerned. Also, Micheal Gambon's character isn't what I would call a 'kingpin' as such, he is just a slightly more experienced, higher-up version of the main character.

When someone says gangster movie to me I think Goodfellas or Snatch, something of that type anyway. Not that much of a distinction I know, but I think it is one all the same.

Not all gangster-movie protagonists are necessarily violent, the main characters in Snatch are a couple of relatively wimpy (illegal) boxing promoters.

They are involved, like the character in Layer Cake, in an ongoing criminal enterprise which brings them into regular contact with underground figures, who are more or less their de facto employers.

The old cigar-smoking fella in the country club seems to arrange the majority of Daniel Craig's business, and he would certainly be considered a kingpin-type.

A large amount of gangster movies (Donnie Brasco, Goodfellas, Snatch) involve characters that operate around the periphery of the criminal world, and do not conform to the traditional "wiseguy" or "wideboy" stereotype. These characters usually possess differing morals and viewpoints, in comparison to the company they keep.

I got a bit confused there for a minute, shame the top film is only a trailer, looks like it could be interesting if it ever gets made.

Oh, really? So it isn't a film?

I might have to look into it. First time I've heard of a trailer for a film this hasn't been made.

Do they use the trailer to try and get funding to make the final film?

not sure its the 'curse of death' as Carpenter has his name above the title of most if not all of his films, its not something he only did with only his more recent and inferior films.
