IIRC, there would be the 12 founding members + 3 more invites to make 15 ever presents. The remaining 5, it was claimed, would be awarded solely on merit.

Yeh but just not seeing how it'd work? The 7th best PL team? Glasgow Rangers? Ajax?

Lot of decent teams about, winning in decent leagues. Would the rest play a lesser form of the CL? Without anyone who gets a go on the gravy train?

Just don't massively see how it'd work.

I suppose it's all theoretical now though isn't it? It seems dead in the water.

I think he felt that Leeds disrespected Liverpool as the T-Shirts were also put in the Liverpool dressing room. He felt that with Liverpool’s history in Europe they didn’t need reminding about how to qualify for Europe.

Yes he was annoyed they left them in the Liverpool dressing room, and as he pointed out, it's not the players fault.

Looks like but I wouldn't be surprised if the next round of changes for the CL, due for 2028, are not far away from what the ESL was anyway.

The reasons why they wanted the ESL are clear for UEFA and the PL to see. If they don't notice any change/reform over time ( and maybe sooner rather than later ) I wouldn't be at all surprised if ESL popped its head above the parapet again in the future.

There is now nobody left defending this ESL idea. Even the people in the middle of arranging it seem to have disowned it. It's a lot like Brexit.

At least the ESL had a pretty clearly understood benefit for the participants

And we are back to the 'sports journalist of the year', allegedly, among other pundits claiming Saudi ownership of a football club is good for the game and they'd have no interest in joining a future ESL (just like none of the other 'oil funded' clubs had an interest in it ... oh wait); woe betide any Newcastle player who dons rainbow laces - they are likely to have their head cut off.

And you have images, on the BBC site, of Chelsea fans holding signs saying "money ruined the game" Is that satire, a complete lack of self awareness, hyprocritical or just a sign that nothing is going to change ? All all four

What they seem to want is...

1. Guaranteed games with other big sides
2. That losing those games don't knock them out of the competition
3. Lots more money

They got all that with the CL - top 4 guaranteed a spot in the Group stages from the 4 top countries, seedings and country protection to give them their best chance of progressing, 3rd place gets a Europa League spot so decreasing the chance of a top club being out of Europe completely before Christmas, lots of guaranteed money etc, but it obviously wasn't enough for a greedy few.

Not really, the format seeding (not sure if this is the correct word) generally kept the decent teams apart. So we basically spend until March watching Liverpool play CSK Sofia, etc. Designed to keep them in the competition admittedly, but not designed to draw decent sides.

Even the 2nd round is designed to keep them apart.

There's a thread from years ago, where Alex Ferguson was complaining he'd been drawn against someone. The general argument was that people didn't want to see those games early on, and that one of the good teams will now have to go out, before they can grace the semi finals. Something like "Man Utd want help to win the CL" was the thread title.

The whole thing seems bizarre and seems to come full circle. I'm old enough to remember the European Cup and then the rebrand to Champions League, when it was the competition for nation Champions.

They then wanted to expand the rich format so more teams come in, then the format becomes a bit crap and full of lesser teams and nobody sees a decent match.

A return to full knockout would be fantastic for the European Cup but that will never happen. Liverpool v Forest in the first round, now that was a fantastic match-up.

Should have added, everyone has to qualify for it as well.

Personally i like to see decent match ups all the way through

IIRC the big Six's problem with the CL changes were not only more matches (another 4?) but more matches against lower quality opposition. The whole format of a league of 20 teams but each team only plays 10 games seems totally nuts to me as well.

It shouldn't be lost that in the midst of Klopp and Guardiola's rant against the ESL they both expressed anger at the new CL format as well.

I think it’s and extra 6 games a season?

Yeah, I think you're right; well, it's 6 extra if you finish between 9th and 24th in the league as you then have to enter a 2 legged play-off.

And no doubt, the English teams in the competition will still be expected to play in the League Cup ?

I see the FA and PL have reacted to the threat of an ESL by looking inwardly and starting to make changes and reform ( which are required and the lack of which caused the ESL idea in the first place ) ... oh, no - they've just brought in a new rule protecting their golden egg laying goose.

Also slightly off topic, but I was just reading about the Europa "Vauxhall" Conference League - sounds like tremendous fun. I wonder who the unlucky team finishing 7th in the Premier League will be?

Not sure if it's changed recently - now that the League Cup final is over - but IIRC there was one scenario where no English team would be in it (something like if Arsenal finish 7th but win the Europa League then England don't get an entry in the Conference) or the team finishing 6th being entered into it (if Chelsea/Leicester finish 7th but win the FA Cup)
