Echo Dot and Ikea Symfonisk speakers

I have a problem with playing anything on a pair of Symfonisk speakers I bought a couple of months ago. I've not really used them since we bought them as I wasn't working, but now I'm back in my office and they're not functioning properly.

I've created a group, put the Symfonisk pair and an Echo Dot in the group and set the pair as the default speakers for music. All good so far.

When I ask Alexa to play music, it replies on the Dot, then starts playing the music on the speakers. Again, all good. However, after just a few seconds, the music will start skipping. It pauses every few seconds, for a few seconds, then starts again. It's driving me mad, and making the setup completely unusable.

I've tried music from my Amazon library, and the BBC Sounds app, both have the same issue. Interestingly, if I play a BBC radio station from Sonos Radio in the Sonos app, that does seem to work, so it looks like some sort of problem with interaction between the speakers and the dot.

Anybody have any ideas? I've tried reauthorising the services in the Sonos app, tried removing the group and readding in the Alexa app. Next step will be to try drop-kicking the speakers out of a window.

I had the same issue with a Dot and a bluetooth receiver attached to my HiFi. I put it down to Amazon Music being a bit crap, but maybe the Dot is overheating when using bluetooth constantly.

I'd have thought that the Dot just sends a command over to the speakers once, as they're Sonos driven? Mind you, what's happening does seem very like the problem you get when other speakers 'dip' when someone speaks to a single one. There are various other Alexa devices in the house, but they don't get used much by other people, so I don't think it's that.

I'd have thought that by putting the speakers as part of an Alexa group, you're making them the speaker output so not passing off audio to that per se. Is there an Alexa command to say Play something on Sonos?

Are the symfonisk working ok otherwise? I returned mine (lamp shape) as they simply wouldn't remain as a pair and were hit and miss playing generally.

I guess it's possible. Using them more today, they seem to be okay when controlled directly from the Sonos app. It's only when the Dot gets into the mix that it all goes horribly wrong.

Previously, I had a single Sonos One in here, but because of the incomplete Alexa integration I was still controlling it using the same Echo Dot. That behaved differently though - when I asked Alexa to play the radio, it replied on the One, but with the Symfonisk it answers on the Dot, then plays the music on the speakers. I guess that's down to the One being Alexa enabled, even though I had the microphone on it turned off.

It's getting better, but home automation across various platforms still seems flaky as hell. I also can't get Amazon music to work via the Sonos app - just constantly tells me it's unable to browse my music. No idea if it's a problem with Sonos or Amazon, or just the two not playing nicely. All help online is of the "have you tried turning it off and on again" variety!

They seem generally okay. They paired immediately, and the sound is very good, just incredibly irritating to use!

The Sonos app has been **** for ages and has actually stopped me buying any more of their speakers.

I'd definitely agree with that. The whole S2 and scrappage fiasco has put me right off.

My Sonos has noticeably improved recently - it was absolutely dreadful for a while after the S2 release - constantly losing speakers and pairings and dropping out during the day.
I get none of that now, although integration with Echo is still a bag of crap - I can't ask my dot to play on the Sonos - it rarely works and normally plays out of its own puny speaker.

I've been using the Sonos controller app to play stations from Sonos Radio - seemed to be mostly working. However, today even that was constantly failing with large pauses in the music. I then started getting dropouts with the app telling me that the "encoding was incorrect" - hardly seems possible when it's Sonos' own radio feed.

With that additional clue to go on, it seemed like the problem was down to network issues and conflicting wireless channels. I tried a channel scanner, and it looks like the wireless from my printer may have been causing a conflict - they're right next to each other.

Using a belt and braces approach, I've changed the Sonosnet channel, and also cabled the speakers. I've now had the radio on for half an hour with no dropouts. Success!

I am going to get a boost this week. The S2 app is now entirely unusable on my iPhone.

So, this wasn't a Sonos issue. It was a BT Smart Hub 2 issue, so, if you're not seeing your speakers you'll need to get BT to push a firmware update to your router.
