Can someone please explain the end of the shining to me?

Seen this film loads of times and really like it but I have never fully understood the end with the picture, what is that supposed to tell you?

I couldnt see it mentioned in the other thread, but I always liked the idea that as well as seeing ghosts in the Overlook, there was some small amount of 'time shifting' between dimensions going on or something.

I never liked the ending either, it seems to me that you could end any film like that, just zoom in past the actor to show his/her face in an old photo. It makes the audience feel dumb & the film looks more clever than it is. Give me John Wayne riding off into the sunset any day.

Well, I never felt dumb

I just thought that the 'evil' personality of Jack had stayed in the 1920's with the other 'ghosts' leaving his physical side frozen in the snow in the present day.

Something like that. It sort of makes sense if you think of the Overlook as being haunted or perhaps trapped in a time period. Or something.

Thats what i figured, the hotel makes people go mad / evil, claims their soul and then when they go skitso, kill people then die, their soul / spirit joins the rest of them in the hotel? Seems pretty sensible no?

Well, surely Jack meets the Overlook at least halfway? That's pretty strongly underlined since his novel has been "All Work and No Play" since the moment he stepped through the door, and the fact that he has potential "darkness" (or whatever) since he drunkenly broke Danny's arm previously.

Of course, this whole premise is pretty weak since it's supposed to be a revelation when Wendy reads the novel and it's obvious, because of Nicholson's hatstand hamming, that Jack's been nuts from the get-go.
