In a similar vein to this, flicking through a colleague's copy of this month's Empire and their section on 10 years of DVDs, their list of Top 10 Most Wanted releases includes the original Welles version of The Magnificent Ambersons. I wonder how much research the writer did to believe that that still exists.

Well, if the Metropolis footage can turn up, one would hope there's room for any possibility. Allegedly there's still a semi-mythical rough cut floating around in Brazil somewhere that Welles fans drool over.

Why is it that these mythical version are always in forgeion countrys where's there's no chance in hell of any body seeing them.

There was ment to be an even more violent version of commando released on vhs in Greece ( which turned out to be aload of bull)

Just in regard to the 2 versions of The Shining, the general concensus seems to be that Kubrick prefered the shorter cut of the film (it is mentioned frequently)...

However, does anyone know if Kubrick's Shining supposed preference is actually based on an actual quote or interview? Is there proof? At the moment, it seems like a simple internet rumour without validation.

I'm aware that Kubrick kept the long version in circulation in the US, which suggests that he did not want to alter the film for an audience already exposed to it. It also seems strange that he would sabotage his own work simply for commercial interests, considering his artistic status, etc - so the shorter cut could very well be the 'definitive' version, from Kubrick's stand point...

Different prints are released in different countries and that is why some prints get destroyed and others surface in some odd places.
