The trailer was......different, as can be expected from Nolan. At a rough guess, probably some sort of CIA Black Ops with an element of Inception-like psychedelic element added. Should be interesting at the very least.
I wouldn’t have thought you would have wide scale cinema reopening in most major markets by July. Surely better to hold back until later in year or 2021.
Nolan is fanatical about big screen releases particularly IMAX for his films.

Up until this trailer, Warners have been quite consistent on the July release. This is the first bit of advertising that has no date, so I imagine it will be delayed.
The 'Coming to Theaters' at the end of the trailer seems like a clear statement that it won't be going straight to streaming like some other studio releases.
As you say, Nolan loves his big screen, & he's probably got enough clout to dictate how his movies get released.

The cricketer? Yep, the facial hair's very similar. But no, he's Denzel Washington's son.
If you think that jumbo jet crash looks very realistic in the trailer... that's because it is!

I planned to do it using miniatures and set-piece builds and a combination of visual effects and all the rest. We started to run the numbers... It became apparent that it would actually be more efficient to buy a real plane of the real size, and perform this sequence for real in camera, rather than build miniatures or go the CG route.
I think they’re going to release it in China and the East though, so I’m sure that will work well and it won’t get widely pirated at all...
I do wonder if they’d be better off just releasing it to streaming platforms now, I suspect he’s got a pretty wide following who’ll be happy to pony up the cash for it. And if it is a good movie, there’s nothing to stop them doing a theatrical release when it can be seen widely - it could still be a “welcome back to the cinema, here’s Tenet and its even more amazing on a big screen” kind of a vibe.
In tandem, just release it to any cinemas who are able to open socially distanced to get some money back in to them. I don’t think some people will be comfortable going to the cinema until there’s a cure/vaccine, so I do think they longer the hold off, the more damage its going to do.
It might not even get a release in China! They currently have a two hour limit on films to minimize the amount of time people are in a cinema together. Tenet runs for 2.5 hours.
