HBO to do Neil Gaiman's American Gods
from Empire.
Quote:
Given how much promotion US network HBO is giving to its massive new fantasy series Game of Thrones, you can tell the channel seems to think it could be on to a winner. And it appears it’s sticking with the idea of adapting fantasy novels into series, entering talks to nab the rights to Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed American Gods.
Gaiman’s story weaves various mythic types into a present-day American adventure that focuses on a war between two sets of gods. One lot, the traditional deities and mythological creatures, are seeing their powers fade as humanity stops believing in them. And they’re slowly being replaced by a set driven by mankind’s preoccupation with technology, celebrity and drugs. Oh, and there’s a con man at the centre of it all who turns out to be much more than anyone suspects.
While it’s early days for the idea, the plan to put Gods up on screen in some capacity certainly has some powerful support. Gaiman and cinematographer-turned-writer Robert Richardson (whose film credits include Inglorious Basterds, JFK, The Aviator, Kill Bill and the upcoming Hugo Cabret) are planning to script the pilot together. They’re being assisted by producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the Playtone team that brought Band of Brothers and The Pacific to HBO.
After years of feeling short-changed by big stories squashed down into two-hour films, the idea of Gaiman’s sprawling, thoughtful, magical tome being treated to the proper series length sounds like a winner. Start praying it happens…

There are so many films and shows being rehashed, it's about time they started trying something different & more challenging!

Bumping this, how good is the book? I've a few to choose from and this is one of them, worth a read?

Wrong forum, surely, but yeah, the book is worth reading. Some people consider it great, some think it's overrated, but on average it's very well regarded.

Looking forward to this as I enjoyed the book. Ian McShane feels like an excellent choice for Wednesday.

Lovely stuff so far, and a great cast.
I was curious as to how they were going to do that scene as it was weird enough in the book.. Now I know.
One a week is a stinker though.

Do you mean the "bed" bit ?
Having not read the book that was weird and to start with I thought was some dodgy blue screen or a joke I was missing,
Loved the show
Couple of scenes really reminded me, not surprisingly, of Hannibal
I can see this, if word of mouth spreads well, being as popular as Game of thrones as proper adult drama

Fantastic first episode but I can never take Ricky Whittle seriously as an actor with his one facial expression
