Star Trek: Discovery - season 1 [Netflix]

This is about to begin! It should appear on UK Netflix at 8am tomorrow (Monday 25th), and I believe we have two episodes to look forward to.

1x01 - The Vulcan Hello
1x02 - Battle at the Binary Stars

The first new Star Trek TV show in 12 years! This promises to be a very different take on the Trek we're used to, but (despite having a visual reboot - which, lets be fair, was needed) it sounds like it's going to be quite true to established continuity. It's also going to surprise us, and is going to be aimed at more of an adult audience.

It has a production budget to match Game of Thrones. CBS are really going all out at making this a BIG show. I am insanely excited about this and am really hoping it's good.

Really looking forward to it tonight! I signed up for the CBS $10pm earlier this morning, the missus can watch her Survivor show too.

Is the Netflix version in DD 5.1? Any onscreen logos on the cbs or netflix?

No logos on the Netflix version.

Not sure there’s much 5.1 content but didn’t check.

Just watched episode 1.

I'm happy to say that it's great. At least, this first episode is. It feels very true to the spirit of the franchise and is focused on characters and ethical/moral issues. The visual reboot is wonderful, and something that Trek sorely needed.

I really don't care if it doesn't match up with how The Original Series looked, because if a modern show looked anything like that it would be laughed at. Discovery is a visual feast, almost every shot is breathtakingly gorgeous and its clear that the big budget has been spent wisely. My only minor gripe is that the redesigned Klingons are bugging me quite a bit, especially given how established they are within the franchise's canon. I'm sure it's something I'll be fine with eventually.

We are given some strong characters here. The lead, Commander Michael Burnham, seems very brash and possibly over-eager. She promises to just do a fly-by of the unknown object found by the USS Shenzhou, and then proceeds to land and and activate it. She's being treated for heavy radiation burns but flees sickbay to get back to the bridge, when surely she could have just contacted the captain over the comm? The final sequence is the most shocking of her actions when she incapacitates Captain Georgiou. Burnham could be a lot to take if she continues like this!

The trailers seemed to indicate that this show would be an action fest. I'm happy to say that's not so at all, and it feels more concerned with characters. I'm an instant fan of Lt. Cmdr. Saru, who is bringing some comic relief with his sarcasm. He's also, quite sensibly, scared! Captain Georgiou is fantastic, but there was little doubt about that since Michelle Yeoh is player the part. The incorporation of Sarek is an interesting one, and while the portrayal here feels nothing like the character established by Mark Lenard so many years ago, there was an intimidating presence and I find myself quite fascinated by the background story being revealed here.

The title sequence is also nice and elegant. I'm delighted to report that Discovery could be great, at least based on this premiere.

Bloody American Football delayed the start by 20 minutes last night so I only watched the first one. Loved the sequence where Sonequa investigated the beacon in her jetpack. Why they didn't send a probe I have no idea! And I had a nerdy trek problem with the hologram communicator. That tech wasn't introduced until DS9. Oh and was Sarek holding his communicator when she called him? It didn't even ring haha.

Just watched this and it is superb. I think we are on to a winner. Can confirm it is broadcast in Dolby Vision and looks sublime.

The production values are immense on this, looks really great though I'm not totally keen on the new Klingon look.

Really enjoyed it overall though. I do hope it it doesn't always take itself so seriously though, Star Trek needs a bit of lightweight silliness at times.

Really enjoyed the 1st episode, will watch the 2nd in a bit. The klingons look weird still, hoping the production values are kept up and not do a money saving ep like the "VR Deck goes wrong"

I'm not a massive ST fan but enjoying this

Not a massive Trekie but I just watched the first episode with the kids and it got a thumbs up from us. ( I don't think I made it past the theme tune for Enterprise.)

Seems I am in a minority - thought it was rubbish. Poorly written and acted - almost but not quite to a Star Wars prequel level. And why is there a female lead called Michael?

Diversity!

Personally I enjoyed it. Subtle enough not to beat your head with humanity ethics and enough to keep me watching certainly. Effects were very good. And the cast looks competent. Saru was the highlight, got a touch of Odo about him.

Recognised a few actors, but the navigator.. what has she been in before? She looks familiar but I didn't catch her character's name so I don't know which she is on IMDB.

Not usually a big Klingon fan, but the hint of internal conflict to come is interesting.

Well that was bloody fantastic, was into it from the moment it started, that last 15 seconds of the opening theme, goosebumps.

This isn't the Trek of my youth but damn if it isn't enjoyable. And as had been says it looked absolutely gorgeous.
