I watched the first episode of The Liberator last night.
If you can get past the odd animation effect (Trioscope) which alternately looks like a dirty filter in front of the screen and a top-down game of Company of Heroes, then there may be a good story in there. It's not Band of Brothers of course.
I've not read the book, but at least from the first episode it'll be worth completing. It's only 4 episodes long mind.

I can recommend the Blood of Zeus animation on Netflix if you like the Castlevania series or Greek mythology. Nice little 25 minute episodes to watch while you have lunch/dinner. Not suitable for young kids.

Castlevania interesting. Was curious about Blood of Zeus which you've compared to Castlevania which I'm currently watching. It seems cool, good looking action scenes, but storywise it seems all over the place, currently on season 3 and am still having trouble 'getting it' it seems to start a story going with one ep or two then the next appears to be a totally different story and the connective thread seems very thin. Now I loved Game of Thrones which did a similar thing, but became a great cohesive whole, but with Castlevania I am now watching and switching off in my head, having given up trying to make all sense of it? Is it just me? It seems to me that Belmont is the hero of the story, but then he's not in episodes and ones I'm watching now seem to be female led. Have started to wonder if you need to have played the games to make sense of it all. TBH I am watching because it always looked cool and Warren Ellis is a local lad, and thought it might get pulled down with the scandal, but hasn't thank god.

Watched 'Last Breath' on Netflix last night. Very good doc on a oil rig diving accident. Like an old 999 episode but using actual footage of the incident. Not for the submechaphobic though..

Stopped watching Castlevania a couple of eps into season 2. Just found it dull and slow moving.

Highly recommended. I felt like I barely breathed during it too.

Dark Waters is (back!) on Prime. Well worth your time.

Also, Parasite the black and white version has also now been added.

Patrick Melrose (2018) 5x1hr - after an incredible hi-octane 'posh-Trainspotting' first episode, things calm down a bit. Gorgeously atmospheric cinematography, good script even for minor characters, and a magnetic performance from Cumberbatch. Watch large and loud. Highly recommended, 9/10

Des (2020) 3x45m - another great acting performance, this time from David Tennant. If anything, it's a bit too short, despite only starting the story after all the murders. Compelling single-sitting viewing, like a UK TV-version of Hannibal Lecter, with added nicotine. 8/10

Devs (2020) 7hrs - I wanted to like this, I really did. But it's very woolly, too daft, and would have made a better 2 hour ep of Black Mirror. I almost gave up half way, but glad I stuck with it - the final ep is confusingly satisfying. But there were quite a few very annoying moments along the way! 6.5/10

Patrick Melrose is so intense. I watched when it was first shown and found some of the episodes impossible to watch without taking a break and switching to something else for a while. Cumberbatch is brilliant as you say.

The recent Juliette Binoche drama/thriller Who You Think I Am is now on Netflix - well worth a look.

Netflix (+ Other Streaming) Recommendations Thread 3

Happiest season is coming next week to prime (rather than cinema)

Mackenzie Davies and Kirsten Stewart are a couple who KS is going to propose and they go home for Xmas to md’s parents who think they are just friends.

I would have paid to watch at cinema as I feel we need far more/in fact any gay Rom cons. No big angst/drama just a nice Christmas rom com. So will rent this when released.

And I do like a good Xmas romance!

I watched Dolly Parton Xmas on the square today. It was cheesy but enjoyable. Main lady from good fight is as ever very good (she us the evil town owner threatening to close down her childhood town)
And everyone sang. And there was a nice old widower around who used to be her childhood boyfriend .
I think we can all fill in the blanks!

Raised By Wolves (2020) - and thread - There's a lot to like - Ridley Scott, unusual (S.African) atmosphere, great cinematography, cool soundtrack, compelling leads, decent CGI for the most part, and the first episode didn't go anywhere close to the direction I was expecting. BUT at times it feels like a kids' TV show or Kirk-era Star Trek - there are loads of plot holes, daft happenings, inconsistent accents and it's struggle to get through to the ridiculously OTT ending. Curiosity only, 5/10

Warner have signed a deal with HBO Max in America to stream all their new movies day one the same day as theaters in 2021 including Dune, Matrix 4 and the new Suicide Squad.

Today cinema finally died.

So will HBO max launch in uk or will deal be signed with someone else ?

I don’t think it will kill cinema completely but will likely change it to something, maybe more akin, to what it used to be. An event. A proper night out.

A “premium” product with the emphasis on the film and the quality of its “projection” than selling popcorn and being full of chavs

I don't believe so mate, I asked around it's very tricky as Sky have a rights deal with HBO (although traditional HBO NOT Max - but clearly there must be some crossover as Sky is showing Raised By Wolves next week) but then Witches was available across all platforms for a premium price. Sky also appear to have an exclusive deal in place to show WW84 as a premium box office purchase.

I'm genuinely stunned by the news. Dune, Matrix 4, hell even the next Conjuring all feel like big, big money spinners so to stream them on the same day, for a whole MONTH, just seems surreal. It's hard to not see this as a massive turning point in the future of cinema distribution. Are we really to believe come 2022 it'll just revert back to normal?

Yep, it does seem very weird for such big screen blockbusters. And if the licensing doesn't get sorted out sharpish for everyone globally to watch, the pirating is gonna be off the scale. It's not like these will be dvd screeners, but full 4k/5.1 ...
