The pics in the Sun article are the Silurians from the Peter Davison era by the way, not the new ones.

The Moff has said in DWM that:
"all those that keep asking are the Silurians back are asking the wrong question"
Basically there was a balls up with them in there first Doctor Who story; Doctor Who and the Silurians, in that they were not from the Silurian period so could not possible be called Silurians.
I think we will get creatures from somewhere around this time in the new series, but they might actually be from the Silurian period this time, which is why they look different.

Side note.. I just looked at the Silurian ear on wikipedia and back then there were 4500ppm (parts per million) of CO2 in the atmosphere and the average temperature was 3C higher than today with a global average of 17C. 1832 there was 284ppm. So 2009 CO2 levels? 387ppm.... hmmm I think we'll be fine

Matt Smith Doctor Who To Kick Off With Hour-Long Episode
Website Radio Free Skaro has scored a bit of a coup by getting its hands on a BBC press release about the first Matt Smith season of Doctor Who. It reveals that the premiere episode will be 60 minutes long, as well as a number of other tantalising titbits (click away now to avoid spoilers:
* Amy Pond is described as "enigmatic" - so does she arrive with a built-in mystery?
* "A silent menace follows Amy and the Doctor around wherever they go" - is this going to be a season-long story arc?
* They explore 16th century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space.
* The Daleks are hatching a new master plan from the heart of war-torn London in the 1940s.
* There are also alien vampires, humanoid reptiles, old enemies such as the Weeping Angels and a Star Whale (which presumably has nothing to do with Pat Mills's abandoned season 20 story, "The Song Of The Space Whale").

Series Fnarg Details Revealed in BBC Release
Radio Free Skaro has stumbled upon an official BBC release promoting the upcoming Series 1 (aka Series Fnarg) of Matt Smith’s tenure as The Doctor. Not only does the release state that the first episode, The Eleventh Hour, will be 60 minutes long, but it gives a few tantalizing details of the series to come. From the release:
Quote:
A new era of Doctor Who begins in Spring 2010. This latest series of the BBC’s flagship drama programme sees Matt Smith’s debut as the new, Eleventh incarnation of the famous Time Lord alongside a new travelling companion, the enigmatic Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).
Together they explore 16th century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space.
As always, wherever the Doctor goes, his oldest enemies are never far behind – the Daleks are hatching a new master plan from the heart of war-torn London in the 1940s. But they are not the only strange creatures the Doctor and Amy must face – there are also alien vampires. humanoid reptiles, old enemies such as the Weeping Angels, a Star Whale, and a silent menace that follows Amy and the Doctor around wherever they go…
|
Very exciting stuff! Interesting to note that the series is also billed as “Series 5″ in the release – how confusing! As always, stay tuned to www.radiofreeskaro.com for all your Doctor Who news leading up to Matt Smith’s debut as the Doctor in the spring.
|
Not sure where they got the press release from (or how true it is) as there is nothing on the BBC site - yet.
There are also some other rumors floating around that this series 'season arch" will be the Doctor trying to recover bits of the TARDIS that are scattered at various times and places due to the crash in episode 1.

I took that to mean the the Silurians have always been here (although hidden) so how can they 'be back'

Ah, that'll be why they look the same to me then?
I'm excited to see the Daleks back, again. I hope they'll go back to being a bit scary again as they've been somewhat overused by RTD. It would be nice to get back to the terrifying Dalek we saw glimpses of in the first new season.

I like that, although I see they're still insisting on the Doctor always appearing in some air-grabbing rapper pose.

The BBC have a habit of starting to showing trailers for its Drama shows around two weeks before airdate, which means we could be looking at a mid-March start date for the series.
Or it might be a special shot trailer that has been rumored will be shown in cinemas in March (some even 'say' its a 3D one) and the Beeb just want to show it on TV first. If this is the case the start date could still be the expected Easter Weekend.

From the Twitter of a bloke I work with who was at the BRITS last night: Spoke to someone last night who had spent the day watching the first six episodes of the new season of Dr Who. It's awesome, apparently.

I'm going to need more info to qualify this, ie. what did he think of, ooh, Last of the Timelords for instance.

First thing I thought when I saw that image, I'd be amazed if a sink plunger doesn't come sticking out of the screen at some point.

More info on the new trailer to be shown on Saturday.
It will be shown at around 6:30pm on BBC1 and will be 40 seconds long.
It will be a new series trailer as opposed to just one for Episode 1 The Eleventh Hour.
The same trailer will be shown in 3D at cinema's before Alice In Wonderland in March.
