Indeed. Despite not being a recognised penalty taker, he stepped up to the plate when required. Plenty of fancy-dans in the side didn't!

Is the Saviola that Arsenal are rumoured to be keen on (for £2M) ... the same Saviola who nearly ruined or CL 2005 run by scoring the winning goal at Monaco via a handball ??
If so ... he's worth more than £2M surely ? And why are Barca letting him go ?

His wages are apparently insane hence Barca feel they can only get a smallish fee for him. He'd never make it in the Premier League IMO so I wouldn't consider him.

Never make it in the Premier League ?? Who knows ... many said the same about Garcia.
Could Liverpool afford his weekly wage ? Could Rafa convince him to take a pay cut like Bellamy ? Are LFC desperate enough for a striker to pay him that muich ??

Saviola would be a fantastic acquisition. However I would prefer a young, in-the-box striker to deputise for and learn from Fowler while he is still playing.

Carra said him and Lampard were the 2 best penalty takers in Training. He said that he had only missed a single penalty whilst practicsing with the England players. Hence why Sven brought him on for the shootout

Playing in a deeper role or wide midfield is different to a striker - Saviola just doesn't like defenders in his face. Saviola up against Bolton would make me cringe
Another small striker would leave us unbalanced up front I think - we've currently got a target man/hold up player in Crouch, a fast striker in Bellamy and a predator in Fowler. I think the 4th striker needs to be more like Crouch but a better goal threat - just what Morientes should have been. Kuyt seems to be the only link that fits the mould so far. But there may be others out there we just don't know about yet!

Parry has rubbished the Joaquin rumours.
Shame he would have been a decent player to have plus might have got shot of a couple of players into the deal.

by the sounds of it the rubbishing appears to be to ease the minds of the players mentioned as possible swap bait.
i didnt quite get the 'we dont want jaoquin at all' kind of vibe from the statement.

The fee is fine - its the wages which are beyond hope. No way we should be making the same mistakes of taking players from abroad on massive wages. They should only be paying that sort of cash to 'high percentage' players - not to players who have struggled for a while now.

Apparently he is on £80k a week, that's less than Stevie G.

It might not have been the most sensitive or appropriate thing to say but were they wrong? There's no reason for a professional footballer to make a mistake like not waiting for the whistle in a shoot-out, especially as they'd practiced it and that mistake was a major part in his penalty being saved.

Shame on the England team then if one of their best takers is Carragher, a defender who's scored about 3 goals in 11 seasons and one of them was, as a midfielder, on his debut against Villa I recall
