Cel Damage is supposed to be quite good in multiplayer. Never played it myself so can't comment. It's old so can be picked up cheap now.
Crash and Burn is a riot online and in multiplayer (dull single player though). Although a new game, it was released for £20 and can be found around for only £15.
Burnout 3 in two player splitscreen is gaming nirvana.

Freaky Flyers is supposed to be in a similar vein, but it didn't get very good reviews IIRC.
Have a google.

MASHED! It's like a cross between Mario Kark and Micro Machines, and is the multiplayer game that gets played most on our XBox

There's a 'real' go cart game that's suppose to be very good. Think it's only out in America though.

Yeah, agreed, Mashed is brilliant, similar to Micro Machines, but actually beats it hands down, lovely multiplayer.
Cel Damage can be picked up for a fiver, decent game, nothing special though. But can't complain at that price.
Mashed is about £15.

The go-kart game somebody mentioned is called Furious Karting, and it's not half bad... can be picked up immensely cheap 2nd-hand...
It's not very cutesy or anything, tho. I'd also avoid the above-mentioned Cel Damage like the bubos... it's abysmal.

No it bloody is not! The frame rate is awful, which wouldn't normally bother me (I'm not a PC gamer!), but it makes it damn near impossible to play. Even on my 42" RPTV, you just can't see what's coming up ahead.
I also find the lack of slowdown for takedowns and crashes makes the game very confusing indeed, although I can obviously see why it's not there.
A real shame there's no System Link IMO because otherwise I'd have seriously considered a second Xbox. Split screen Burnout 2 was fine and a regular fixture in our house

My mates and I find it fine, both on my 21" monitor and on a 32" widecreen. We've spent hours playing the game like this. Granted the farmerate drops to 30 fps, but then it did on the GC and PS2 versions of Burnout 2 and they were fine to play in splitscreen too.
A system link version would have been nice though.

there is nothing to compare to mario kart. If you want to play mario kart get a cube and a copy of it. It won't cost much and you'll be getting exactly what you want.

Although, it has to be said, Double Dash!! is probably the weakest Mario Kart to date...

The 'no sense of speed and awful battle mode' N64 version was the nadir of the series for me.
Personally, I think the GBA version is probably the best, but the SNES version is obviously where my heart belongs.

No it it isn't. That accolade belongs to the N64 version.

Indeed, n64 was bad. The only problem with DD is the cheating CPU cars, although 4-way link games should help there when I'm in my next house.
The GBA one was good but not better than the SNES. The small screen may be partly to blame - never tried it on an emulator - but I never understood the 4 races per cup, making draws far more likely. Hmm.
I doubt I'll ever play another game more than I played the SNES version as a nipper.

Just something that struck me actually - I'm surprised no super geeky type has, with the use of a Super Mario Kart ROM, tried to engineer some kind on online play version for up to 8 racers. I understand it would be pretty hard, as it was coded for a max of 2 players, but sweet lord it would be awesome. I'd be happy to chuck some cash into a Paypal account to keep someone alive while they did it
