Not an app per se, but a site I find incredibly useful. Creates a temporary mailbox for any email address you wish, allowing you to sign up to sites (I find it useful for when I want to download trial software/game demos) without giving your real email address.
www.mailinator.com
Just enter any address @mailinator.com when registering on a site (e.g. dvdforums @ mailinator.com), go to www.mailinator.com and enter the mailbox name (dvdforums in this case) to check that temp inbox for authorisation emails etc.

I found Rad FTP Applet whilst looking for an ftp client that didn't need to be installed on your pc (no admin rights at work). It's a great java applet that you can upload to your webspace so that you can upload from any pc without an ftp client. Rad FTP Applet

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ if you want to do it manually.
IIRC, there's a plugin included with http://www.foobar2000.org/ which allows you to create previews of selected tracks. I remember seeing it in the options list when I was installing the "special" version of foobar2000 available on the site, which comes with loads of extra plugins. I didn't install or use it, though, so don't quote me on that

JV16 powertools costs $29.95 for the latest version. You can still download the last free version from here.

Edit: Appears it may just be in a particular beta version, see here.
If I needed a download manager (and with broadband I generally don't) I'd use 'wget'. It's an open source utility from Gnu, though UNIX based. It can be made to run on Windows under Cygwin and probably has a port to Windows natively though it's a command line tool but it's dead simple to use (e.g. 'wget http://someplace.com/file.whatever'), and you'll never see a trace of spyware.
In the main though I just use the downloader in Firefox.
P.S. (from that link I posted above)... A good list of useful freeware apps...

Seems this comes from alt.comp.freeware

Some newer tools on my travels:
Best freeware Zip tool: ZipGenius - now at version 6. It also has a couple of utils for splitting files and making a zip into an iso. http://www.zipgenius.it/
Are there any better ones? and if so why?
Also for office environments. ideal for stopping people mailing huge docs about : nino tech Path Copy 4. http://home.worldonline.dk/ninotech/freeutil.htm - The only thing this doesn't do is put < > quotes around long unc paths to make them outlook friendly.

Notepad++ - An open source, language sensitive editor and general replacement for Notepad. Fairly small footprint and the syntax highlighting and folding stuff is pretty neat. I'm already using it for when firing up Visual Studio or a number of other apps is too much of a pain.

I use Internet Download Manager, never had any problems with it. I have a 2 meg connection and due to the way it downloads, I get speeds of on average 250 k/s

Are there any cheap or free Apps that will allow me to put pictures taken on a digital camera, and burn them to DVD or CD so they can be viewed on a normal standalone DVD player?
Cheers

I can just copy files (and folders) onto a normal CD and pop this into my DVD player which does the rest - no special programs needed.
