A fantastic app to resise whol directories of jpegs - customisable - you can add a watermark, and have different quality settings.

Very useful for converting photos for the web. Use it all the time.

VMWare Player coupled with QEMU, this website and Daemon Tools = A fully useable and free alternative to other VMWare or Virtual PC products.

Use the website info and QEMU to create the VM image - Daemon tools to mount, unmount cdrom images etc.

PURETEXT - if like me you copy/paste a lot from the web into Office apps (or even between Word & Excel & Outlook) then this is a useful little app to remove all formatting - effectively a "paste as plain text" in a single key-stroke. It's a tiny 13k download; running gives you a systray icon. Then [ctl]-c as normal but [win]-v to paste as plain text (by default - rightclick on systray icon to change defaults). http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/

Diskeeper Lite 7 was the last version made generally available. But there is a newer version available at the Intel website as part of their Desktop Utilities; I believe it is version 9. See http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/idu/ (I have read in another forum that if you have DK 7 Lite installed, you must uninstall it first before attempting to install the Intel Desktop Utilities).

The difference between Windows own defragmenter (provided by ExecSoft), the Diskeeper Lite version and the Pro version is

* Windows: defragments files only, sometimes partially when not much free space left, and extremely slow.
* Lite: defragments files only
* Pro: defragments files, MFT, page file, and folder file. It also has options to prevent fragmentation, e.g. by padding the MFT.


You need to download the 87MB Utilities file from the Intel site, then unzip it. In the unzipped folders you will find 2 Diskeeper Lite Programs - 1 32bit version and 1 64bit version. I simply extracted these 2 directories, and used the setup files in the individual sub-folders. I discarded the rest of the Intel utilities, but of course there may be something useful there.

Gameshadow has now gone free. Been using this for a couple of years and its excellent. Scans your hard drive for which games you have installed, and tells you whether its up to date and then lets you download the relevant patches from fast servers. Also supports gfx drivers, mods and demos.

I aplogise in advance of this question, but having got a warning email from BT about my download's last month (93GB whilst on option 4, which has a 40GB limit) i'm a bit concerned about the financial implications and need to find a bit of software that will keep an accurate measure of d'loads.

NetMeter has a good lot of usage statistics, and also an alarm you can set when you get to a set limit.

I installed this yesterday, but ten minutes ago I noticed that the totals have gone from the program window. I can check & uncheck the "show minimum value" box and that info disappears and reappears, but the other two options don't. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Resize the window so that those items fit? Or make the font smaller.

Hiren's BootCD is quite good for when you computer bodges up, and even has Mini98 which supports NTFS and stuff and runs on your RAM!
