as per the very first post in this thread

If the total value of goods in the package exceeds £18, the VAT and duty is charged on the total value of the goods INCLUDING P&P

Ah if it's over £18 it's charged on top. Gotcha.

This is why my head was exploding earlier trying to work it out

It's the new Hitchcock boxset that I'm wanting. It's $83.99 plus $6.48 for shipping, the delivery will be via Royal Mail. I'm not to bothered what the total cost will be as I've got a R1 supplier quite local to me but they are charging £76.99 for the set. I am definitely buying it, it just depends where from.

That's what I'm after as well, although I might have to sell my Criterion versions to fund it! Let us know if you find a good supplier!

Warning - the pound has fallen against the dollar so rapidly recently that HMRC have amended the August rate from just over 1.99 to just over 1.86 (dollars to pounds).

They can do this if there is a fluctuation in the rate (either way) of 5% or more when they do a weekly review.

It;s the first time I have ever seen the rate for two major currencies amended - though they are very common between for example pounds and Zimbabwean dollars.

Customs charge + RIP OFF Post office Handling fee.

Hey all,

I bought some HD-DVDs from the US and i just went over the £18 threshold totalling £19.50 and customs have hit me for £3.47 for the vat. Now accept the customs charge as it did go over. Now the post office have added £8 on to this totalling £11.47 for a £19.50 package.

Anyone else experienced this, seems a quite extortionate considering the value.

Rant over

Thems is the rules, you've been unlucky though as it's a gamble whether it gets through without charge or not.

Big thread in suppliers.

Hopefully, if enough people pay £8, they may be able to train my current post person that mail actually fits inside the letter box, and not thrown inside the front porch.

What's a reasonable fee then?

I don't really know enough about it TBH - if it costs them say, £5-6 to collect and process the item from customs, then £8 would be reasonable. If it costs them £2 then £8 is silly.

The Remote I bought managed to get from Seattle, USA - Customs, England for £7 (taking 5 days), then from Customs to my SO in Manchester for £8 +17.5% of cost of item (taking 14 days!).

1) Use calculator to work out VAT
2) Add ridiculous £8 fee
3) Write it on a card

Takes about 30 seconds. I'll round it up and say 5 minutes an item. So yeah, 50p sounds fair to me. Unless there is realms of paperwork that need to be filled out behind the scenes, then I suppose £1.50 might be fair. £8 seems fairly ludicrous to me. Happy to be educated though if the £8 is somehow justified.

sounds fair to me - been very well publicised on these forums for years.

because it's a *service* then difficult to calculate a cost - is it any different to a 10 minute haircut for a tenner, or £40 to get a plumber round ? the thing is, what else are you going to do ? there's no alternative, so you pay the asking.

im sure i have read somewhere of a way of avoiding the payment - something about them not legally being able to charge you ??
