Microsoft critical update to cd

Hi

I'm hopefully picking up a laptop today and I am having difficulty in finding the critical updates on the Microsoft web site so I can download on my desktop pc and put onto cd.

I've spent 30 minutes (lunch break) and got totally confused as to what to download.

Any chance someone could post a direct link for the critical updates for XP so I don't pick up a virus when I connnect to the net?

TIA

MM

Can't you just go to the "windows update" thingy on the start menu. Then Microsoft will 'scan' your PC and give you a list of critical updates, driver updates and other (guff) updates for you to select and install.

Maybe I missed your point?

edit: yeah OK, stupidity rules OK. You ment install the updates BEFORE going on the net. Doh.

That will let you download the patches ahead of time As for which you will need, that's anyones guess, but just get the RPC patches and then you will be fine to use windows update to get the rest before browsing the internet.

Sorry about this but I'm completely lost now.

Kryten, what does RPC mean?

The reason I posted this is if I use the Microsoft update I will get a virus so I must install the critical updates first. I don't want a virus so downloading to my desktop first and then burning to a cd will get me round this problem. I've seen a virus infect a new pc within 10 seconds of going on the net and that's not going to happen to me if I can help it.

I've already found the patch which stops MSBlaster but not sure which others I need.

RPC = Remote Procedure Call = Blaster hole! You have the main patch for that so apply that and should be fine to go online. My suggestion would be to install your virus scanner and get the latest updates for that too before going online

I would update my virus scanner but I need to go online to do that, don't I?!?!?!?

I'm really suprised Microsoft haven't addressed this issue. How the hell can I update without getting a virus

I have this patch "WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe" which I beleive stops the Blaster hole but this morning on tv they said the Sasser Worm can infect you within 10 seconds of being online if you are not patched.

Ohh, what do I do!

What virus scanner? Most have off-line updates you can apply, but don't advertise it as much

WooHoo. Problem solved.

A good friend of mine just told me to get this.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

So with those 2 patches I should be able to get online long enough to get the rest of the critical updates, I hope.

Looks like Microsoft are busy as I'm downloading the patch at <1kb/s on broadband.

Only got one problem left to sort now. The laptop didn't arrive today but I should get it tomorrow and I'm armed and ready. lol.

Thanks for your help peeps

I have installed SP1 and the update rollup pack 1.
