I've just updated my Ad-aware ok. Before it was getting stuck at 5% but it looks like they've corrected that problem so you don't need to install the other version.

When I load up my home page I'm getting 3 or 4 other pages opening at the same time. Some of these are www.free6.se and www.snyggast.se.

I've got the folllowing protection

Adware
Spybot
Nortons
highjackthis
startpage guard

. . . but none of these seem to remove this problemo.

Anyone had this or got any ideas?

Adware, can I delete everything it finds, even in the registry?

My sister is having exactly the same problem, so Out for Justice if you find a solution could you post what you did please

I've ran Spybot and AVG with no luck

Yeah, usually. It creates a system restore point before doing anything. Most tracking cookies are ok (e.g. they are used for affiliate tracking on here

), but everything else can be removed. I would also run Spybot and cwshredder etc as you find that one can find things others do not!

I'm sick of IE so I've downloaded Mozilla to use instead.

All these hacks seem to target IE so I'm trying a different engine. Hopefully it will be a lot more immune.

So far so good. (those pages aren't popping up anymore as I'm not using IE)

Apparently Mozilla is all the rage these days

There's lot's of useful links on www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn but the stand-out util is ADS Spy... which shows up any wierdness that's hanging about in Alternate Data Streams in your files.

For those that don't know about ADS, and NTFS File Streaming (and I didn't until I read about it in PC Pro's January 2005 issue) it's a legitimate NTFS feature that's used for cross-platform (ie Mac files) compatibility - but the upshot is that you can put *anything* as a second "stream" to a normal file and it doesn't show up when you look at the file through explorer etc.

Hidden space that no-one knows about = spyware heaven. Observe just how dodgy this can get!

Problems with MS AntiSpyware beta...

As it's a beta it's important to stress that if you don't know what you're doing with computers and don't take back-ups... DON'T use it. It may seem fine, but there are no guarantees and if your machine is trashed by a bug in the software, you are screwed. Wait until the final version.

Be aware also that MS might charge for it in the future (it's widely rumoured with insider information suggesting it. It's certainly going to be part of what's codenamed 'A1' which is Microsoft's AntiVirus and AntiSpam combined package and that will most likely involve a subscription, but whether the AntiSpam will also be available separately for free is another matter). Expect perhaps free trials though (a years subscription perhaps).

im running the microsoft thing for the first time and the amount of stuff its picking up is well dodgy. i have the spybot, ad aware, etc stuff in there but they arent picking up whatever is making my computer very slow at start up

The Windows Genuine Advantage stuff does that when you first download it, but at the moment you can opt out of it whilst it's in beta. It will be mandatory in release, as it will be later this year for all but the critical updates from Microsoft, at least on XP anyway.

I'm not aware of it scanning in the app itself, but if they go with a subscription that needs to connect to a server then I can see it doing that and then if it's a dodgy key it will just not download updates.
