I thought commodo (sp?) was annoying to use, was going to use the kerio/sunbelt firewall but in one of those links it come out as quite poor in defending the computer.
I'm using zone alarm and does the job, was using sygate firewall pro 5.5 but the program is 3 years old, probably has vulnerabilities and outdated now

comodo - last time I tried, it took a while to fully configure, and asks lots of questions (and gives plenty alerts)

I've just aquired a virus that repeatedly unchecks the "Show Pictures" box under "Advanced" in Internet Options?
Does anyone know how to shift this one? It's also put something on where a user has to manually sign in.

have you tried malwarebytes ?
just googled & found this -
Quote:
... can't view images on IE. I go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Multimedia section and notice that the "Show Pictures" box is unchecked. So I check the box and all is fine. Then on some random restart of my pc, I'll start IE, and BAM! no pictures ...
Just thought I would post the fix just in case someone else was having this same issue.
Turns out it was malware, and it wasn't on random reboots. The malware recognized the date change. Every time the computer was started or restarted on a new day, it would set:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Display Inline Images" string value to "no".
The only program that found it was Spybot Search & Destroy.

I just uninstalled Comodo after 3 days. it was doing my head head in with all the pop ups. Install a piece of software and you have to give it permission 7 or 8 times, then when you run it asks for more permissions. I know you can turn it to install mode but it's overbearing. Looking for a new Vista compatible firewall now.
EDIT - Kerio does not seem to be free anymore, just a 30 day trial. I always used ZA in the past and have found it to be good however it's not currently Vista compatible. Any other suggestions?

no - Kerio has worked like this for years - install the free trial, then the 'advanced' features become disabled after 30 days. Basic firewall continues working (although you do get a monthly nag nowadays) - http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/home-...sonal-firewall

kerio & comodo both work on vista.
if you want to read up, there's loads of info on these 2 good sites -
http://www.firewallguide.com/software.htm - and - http://www.matousec.com/projects/fir...ge/results.php
beware of kerio's low rating, but as with many things - reduce your risk (HIV: use condoms, malaria: cover up) - so avoid warez sites, etc

I'm trying comodo at the moment, is it me or does it take ages to initialise on bootup? It loads in the tray fine but if you click on it and go into open you can see that it takes about another 2 minutes before its fully initialised, at least it does for me.

RESCUE DISCS - update

BUT it is slow (very thorough) and reports outdated definitions file (but will be worth a go if all else has failed, and your system cannot even boot into windows).
Virus Removal Tool (on demand only scanner/cleaner - no real-time & no updater) - http://dnl-eu14.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/ (use the most recent) - . It uses the same technology as Kaspersky Anti-Virus to detect and remove viruses. For a free tool, it is very configurable, allowing you to set what to scan, how much to scan, whether to use heuristics etc. There is another feature called “Manual Cure”. It works similarly as HijackThis.

A-Squared does. Just click on the Scan PC tab, then Custom Scan. You can configure which drives//folders you want to scan and at what depth.

there's a good 2-page discussion thread here - Which free anti-virus - http://www.thedvdforums.co.uk/forums...d.php?t=562275 and comprehensive testing results here - http://www.av-comparatives.org/
to summarise the dvdf thread, in approx order of popularity - Avira, Avast, Antivir, (Clamwin)

My email client has sent out an email to everyone in my address book - I ran AVG virus scan but it came up with nothing.
Can anyone please recommend me a decent free anti-spyware program, as this is going to be my next step.
Thank you.

Jimmyboy - how'd you get on with comodo ? Would you recommend it for a n00b, or do you (still) get asked lots of alerts/questions ?
