I've got a problem with Spy Sherrif. It keeps popping up a speech bubble saying my computer is infected - it's not, only with this popup. Howcan I get rid of it. I've used Adaware, Spybot and MS antispyware (which finds it and deletes it, but it comes back again). Thanks

Hi
I seem to have some virus on my PC that after a while of being connected to the internet a pop up appears saying "Your computer is infected".
Also, after 30minutes online, someone/thing tries to open MS paint via the start run menu!
Very odd!
Can anyone help?

Try running the following programs, all of which you can find the links to in the first post in this thread:
Ad-Aware
Spybot
CWShredder
HijackThis

Looking at someones PC that was infested with all sorts. cleaned virtually all off now, but there are two (or poss the same one in 2 parts) tool/search bars that will not budge.
MS Antispyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot do not remove them. Hijack this has been run and suspicious entires removed. still they are there.
seems to be "open search web" when you click on a search from it (the toolbar is in 2 parts - 1 across the top of ie, and a double bar at the bottom of the screen as well.
Any nuggetts of info on this one ?
edit - managed to get shut of it eventually.

Alan,
The link to HijackThis download seems to be out of date. The link to the author's download page is http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
Cheers

I am getting an error message whenever I try to do a search on google(all other search engines seem fine)
It says:
We're sorry...
... but we can't process your request right now. A computer virus or spyware application is sending us automated requests, and it appears that your computer or network has been infected.
We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your computer is free of viruses and other spurious software.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google.
To continue searching, please type the characters you see below:
With a box underneath to type in a jumble of letters that come up
Any suggestions?
I have tried all the usual spyware removers (ad aware, spybot s&d and MS beta thingy) and done a full virus check. All of them come up with nothing.

Have you also tried Ad-Aware SE and MS Anti-Spyware?

spyware troubles
Hi guys. I'm new to all this forum malarkey so bear with me. I've read all the spyware blurbs and tried boatloads of them but I'm still in bother. At the mo' I'm running Ad-Watch, Spyguard, Spybot-Search and Destroy and my pc is still playing up. I've lost control of my homepage (though I tried PageStart with no success), I keep getting a blurb telling me that my computer is trying to connect me to another website, pop-ups keep, well, popping up! When I run scans with Spybot it keeps finding stuff like "Smitfraud-C" & Vcodec. It gets rid of most of them but the next day they're back! However Ad-Watch doesn't find these, just a load of MRU's (I think they're called) which it says are negligable. Another yellow alert box pops up once an hour telling me that I've got the last trojan virus too. Weirdly, my pc isn't running slow or anything and it does everything it did before I got the spyware troubles. It is very annoying though with all the pop ups and the loss of my homepage and I'm new to computing so I'm very worried too. Although my girlfriend would love the pc to go t*ts up as apparently "I spend too much time on it..." I realise this a long message but can anyone offer any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forums Steven
Regarding this "Smitfraud-C" trojan, I found these intructions:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=75890
There are a lot of sites containing information about Vcodec as well as these two seem to be connected.

To Alan B
Thanks for trying but no good. When making the reboot action I got the "wrong action" noise with the script saying the action was aborted by an outside user!!! Sounds very ominous, yet my pc still works perfectly but for the pop ups and homepage loss etc etc.
p.s. second user (asking about Microsoft Defender Beta 2). I tried it AFTER getting spyware infection but no help. Try it though, you may have better luck.

I take it you've tried scanning for viruses using a decent AV program (such as NOD32)?

Yeah, I've been using the free virus scan at Avast. There files it can't scan which is the first time I've come across that. No doubt it's all related. I've only had a pc for 8 months and since I've not come across spyware before I've absolutely no idea how to deal with it. I'm counting myself lucky my system isn't as bad as it could be. I'm also using Norton Antivirus.
