Excellent review Mark and quite agree with everything in it.

As you mention the Arrow BR does not blow up the colours too much (Well Done James) like the Blue Underground version which when the claret flows it does not stand out as much, like it should do and does on the Arrow version

James White also points out in an interview on AV Forums that the worldwide licensees of the film and owners of the camera negative, Variety, had never heard of Blue Underground so bearing in mind the restoration shorts BU put on you-tube what did they actually use to do their bluray?

Blue Underground licenced theirs from Jerry Gross Organisation so it probably came from them via Variety. No conspiracy theories needed.

Also worth pointing out that while the Arrow release has a better resoration job, its missing 6 seconds from the start of the film which might, or might not, bother some.

The extra picture information on the Arrow is because theirs is from the original 2-perf Techniscope camera negative. The Blue Underground has less image information around the sides which suggests they used the 4-perf blow-up which is needed to distribute Techniscope prints.

So it's possible both companies are telling the truth when they say theirs is sourced from "the original negative". The Arrow certainly comes from the original camera negative, and the evidence points to BU using the 4-perf blow-up negative which would have created all the distribution prints. Maybe this also explains the 6 seconds missing right after the credits. For some reason, maybe those aren't part of the camera negative and the edit was changed later on the blow-up negative.

That sounds logical to me. The idea that the Blue Underground release is some form of bootleg edition is laughable.

So basiacally arrow uses the camera negative and BU uses the Techniclour Neg, Seems legigt.

It's only a theory without being privy to the hard facts, but it is a good fit and neatly sidesteps any online libel...
